Salvation Army overwhelmed by local generosity Lynda Hillman-Rapley Lakeshore Advance Overwhelming is a word Captain Bram Pearce uses a lot when he talks about the Canada -wide support since the August 21 tornado that devastated Godt'rich. Pearce is the officer for I luron County and says there are so many donations; it Is difficult to manage the influx. "It has been a blessing," he said as he sat with Pat and LeeAnn Powers at Aunt Gussies last week. Soon after the tornado, LeeAnn said she wanted to do something for those people who were disfranchised. She wanted to raise money that would go right to the people who needed it and knew the right tit was the Salvation Army. After speaking with Pearce she knew that was the direction she would go. l'he Powers, with the Aunt (ussies staff and close friends organized three music nights that brought together the community, and more than $20,000 for Goderich. "'this was really important to us," said l,eeAntt saying the community jumped on board to help out. Pearce said th1 ' • lags that Cottle to them goes dire(' the people who need it. "I was fantasti- cally surprised with the of financial help - more than $69,000 as of last week. I le said although they appreciate the food, clothing and furniture, financial does "not take up space" and allows them to purchase specific items. Before the tornado the Salvation Army supplied Bl) food hampers per month for those in nerd. Since the disaster those numbers raised to 320. They fed 1,500 people per day for the first two weeks. The Powers said they are thrilled to he able to help the Salvation Army because this agency will still be there after all the help leaves and a sense of normally returns. "'they were there for the recov- ery and they will continue to be there for the community' said LeeAnn.
