Taking steps to help people with dementia

"In Huron and Perth, because we
have an existing seniors mental health
team, we received $270,000 annual to
be added to our existing programs to
look at how we are going to work
together with our coi nntunity
partners, long tern) care facilities, One
Care', CCAC, hospitals, the Alzheimer's
Society, to deal with those behaviours,"
said Penny Canino, program director
for the Seniors Mental Health 'Team.
"As part of this year three, there was
expectations that every community
develop it cooperative health care
providers and family members
included -- by getting together and
talking about tht' challenges of
navigating the system, transitioning
and working in the system," she said.
In Huron Perth that cattle in the
development of the Huron Perth
Geriatric Cooperative. "Our goal is
really about bringing these people
together and learning together about
our system, the resources we have in
the community and then learning
together about how to care for those
individuals with responsive
behaviours,' she said.

was about understanding why people
act in it certain way and how that
illness is interfering with then) being
able t() receive care. o1' be able to
remain in their home.
"The whop' purpose of this project
is to give health care providers the
resources to help people be cared for
at home and return home after an
acute episode, whether that is a
private home or long -terns care
facility. A lot of these responsive
behaviours snake it difficult for a
person to be able to go home or
remain at home," she said.
Canino said it is also about caring
for the caregivers.
1)r. LeClair said fancily members can
provide the whole picture when it
comes to diagnosing metal illnesses.
"'plat is So important because it is the
family who has a history with the
patient,' he sails.
The Alzheimer's Society has a
support group in place for caregiver`.
Cartlno said the goal of the
cooperative IS to enhit ll('t'
communication, develop it cart' plan
to support the individual and family.
She said services for mental health is
available now in Huron and Perth
Counties and has been for 15 years.
"We are getting an enhancement 10
our services with all this new funding
- we have been able to hire additional
staff," she said, abasing some areas of
the province are just starting mental
health tea)))s.

Annual shuffleboard tournament
at new Legacy Centre

The annual tournament was held on
Monday, September 19, 2011 at the Leg-
acy (:entre, with 60 participants attend-
ing from all over South -Western Ontario.
Ruth Ann Piggott was the'Tournannent
Director. all teams were formed and
play progressed throughout the day
until 4 teams in each of the "Main
Event" and "Consolation" categories
were determined as finalists.

Main Event were:
