Dementia rates are skyrocket-
ing across the province.
In Canada, there is a new case
of dementia every five minutes;
by 2038 it will be every three
minutes.
Those numbers, combined with
support from the Southwest LHIN
(Local Health Integration
Network), was the reason for a
responsive behaviours workshop
held in Mitchell on Sept. 19.
Hosted by the Huron Perth
Geriatric Cooperative, about 150
health-care providers gathered to
share resources and learn how to
better care for individuals with
responsive behaviours. At some
point in their lives, one out of
three will have dementia before
they die.
Guest speaker Dr. J. Kenneth
LeClair, geriatric psychiatrist,
said, "We need to problem solve
together, across all levels of health
care, to find mechanisms that will
help with prevention of mental
health illnesses. Right now our

and these two names - the

LeClair's talk focused on
responsive behavioural chal-
lenges in older adults, things like
agitation, psychosis, depression
and violence, and some strategies
for dealing with them.
"We have a challenge in front of
us, and an issue that perhaps we
have to think about doing things
a little bit differently," he said.
As it affects more and more
people, the urgency to develop
