"It's a last resort in our perspective,"
Tyler conceded. "'That's a decision you
must make. We have to give 48 hours
notice."
That decision appeared to be made
immediately when the audience in
North Middlesex Community Centre
loudly applauded residents Angie Rich-
ter and Erica Michielsen who spoke pas-
sionately against spraying and its poten-
tial impact on other wildlife such as
birds and frogs. "Clean up the standing
water," Richter urged.
North Middlesex Mayor Don Ship-
way, who chaired the meeting, gave no
indication to the audience that the adul-
ticide approach would be considered.
But he has revealed to Me Advance that
ief from mosquitoes
council met later Tuesday night and
voted to reject spraying based on "the
mood" of the public meeting.
Adulticiding would not be a pre-
ferred option for Medical Officer of
Ilealth I)r. Graham Pollett, one of four
Middlesex -London health Unit staff
members in attendance. Ile did not
speak at the meeting but told Focus later
that spraying to kill adult biters might
warrant consideration if evidence of
West Nile virus were found but he heard
"a strong message here" that spraying
was not wanted.
The health unit's environmental
health team manager David White told
the meeting West Nile has not been
found in Parkhill since it was identified
in captured mosquitoes in 2005 and
2003. White said 215 visits to 17 sites

have found fewer than 7(X) larvae of the vector type
of mosquito that can transmit West Nile virus and
there have been no confirmed West Nile cases in
trapped mosquitoes... 20,000 of them captured in
the previous week and a total of nearly 80,(XX) since
this season's program began. 'That's far more than
anywhere else in Middlesex and London.
White reported a company contracted by the
health unit has completed the summer's second
round of larviciding in on -street catchbasins and
treated 29 areas of standing water. Ile appealed to
residents to telephone the health unit if they have
catchbasins on their properties so they can be
treated.
Mayor Shipway told the public meeting North
Middlesex staff have cleared three heaver dams
which cause standing water breeding grounds.
And he said in The Advance interview he has since
learned the Cameron -Gillies Creek, which runs
through town, is classed as a municipal drain and
it will be cleared of objects that impede the flow of
water.
Leadership of a potential longer -terns solution
rests largely with Ausable Hayfield Conservation
Authority whose general manager Tom Prout was
subjected to some booing when introduced. After
accepting an 800 -signature petition from resident/
businessperson Carrie Muma, Prout said his ABCA
staff will be doing some field investigation "in the
next few weeks" at a 25 hectare (60 acre) primary
breeding area immediately downstream from
Parkhill Dam.
"One idea is to do a selective cleaning of tr
-
wetland. We're going to look at all possible sol
tions," said Prout. "1'11 take the petition to the board
(of directors) to get authority to do a management
plan." Ile said he hoped for an action plan by this
fall.
Mayor Shipway, North Middlesex representa-
tive on the ABCA board, said the petition was pre-
sented to the directors' monthly meeting Thursday,
July 21, and "they're willing to co-operate." Ship-
way also revealed that staff of ABCA, the Township
of North Middlesex, Middlesex -London Health
Unit and Pestalto Environmental Health Services
Inc. were to meet again on Tuesday of this week to
plot a long-term plan.
Petitioner Carrie Muma summed up Parkhill
citizens' mood, "Our livelihood has changed.
Something has to be done. We can't keep living like
this. We can go to other towns and there are no
mosquitoes. How long is this going to take?"
fiord Whitehead OMI Agency
Signs created by Ashley Dako, left, Teagan Macrae
and Emma Haskett summed up the sentiments of
more than 400 Parkhill area residents who hoped
to hear that thls season's relentless scourge of
mosquitoes soon would end. The Tuesday, July 19
audience in North Middlesex Community Centre
heard of no satisfactory, sudden solution.
