'1'he Community (:entre in 'Medford has been
the heart of the community for nearly 35 years now
and like any life-long family home, the Centre was
due for renovation. It is where people learn to
skate, play hockey and gather to celebrate wed -
h)gs, anniversaries and other special moments in
:e. It is where parents watch their children grow
Mid where the community comes together time
and time again,
l,amhton Shores wanted to ensure that the heart
of this community continues to heat strong and
steady for many years to come, And so, the project
begin.
This fabulous new facility has expanded on the
existing centre by adding a large east wing, a new
entrance, new community hall, new nursery
school, new library and new dressing rooms. New
energy saving electrical and plumbing systems will
be incorporated into the redesign as well.
A fundraising committee was formed and the
members were committed to raising $400,000,0()
plus, "Isis is a very exciting venture for our com-
munity" says teff''/avitz, fundraising chair. 'the fun-
draising committee got organized and the tears
hoped that residents would embrace this opportu-
nity to steal up and give a generous donation to
ensure that we leave a legacy for generations to
come. And donate they did.
Peggy Van Mierlo-West, director of Community
Services says this was a challenging project and
not Without some unexpected surprises, such as
the need to remove the old ice pad and replace
substandard fill In that area. !laving said that, the
new facility will house events for many years to
conte,
'Ihe 1949 building was condemned in 1976 and
the community were forced to go elsewhere for a
year. It was time to create a new legacy for 'Med-
ford --and some only dreamed that would happen.
Saturday, that dream will come to fruition with the
opening of the legacy

From 1962 to '66, local newspapers
were filled with articles about the Telephone System's
preparation for the cut -over to •dial and the "End of
an Era" as live operators are phased out and new
digital switch equipment is installed in Grand Bend,
Zurich and Dashwood. One of the last operators
shown here is Frances Gibson in the Dashwood office
