The pel- lets, less than Italia centimeter in size, washed in during a storm. The plastic (resin) pellets are the raw materials used to created plastic products when melted and molded. 'Phis wasn't the first time plastic pellets were observed washing up on Huron beaches. There were occurrences recorded in 2008, 2007, 2004 and anecdotal reports of occurrences prior to that. The source of the pellets has been difficult to track down. Me wide distribution along Lake l Huron beaches seems to point towards a ship based spill. The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation (Coastal Centre) brought the issue to the forefront after it identified the extent of the 2010 incident to a 120 kilometer swath of hike 1 luron beaches. Researchers from the University of Western Ontario analyzed pellets from last year and com- pared them with pellets they retrieved in 2008. Mere were very few similarities between the pel- lets from the two years, indicating that the pellets were from two separate incidences. Analysis from the plastic manufacturing industry sug- gested that the pellets washing onto beaches were not of North American origin. Multi-year recurrences of pellets washing ashore is a concern to organizations like the Coastal Centre. "Plastic pellets don't belong on our beaches, and they pose a potential 11a7aanl to fish and wildlife," said Geoff Peach, Coastal Resources Manager for the Centre. "While the issue has not been resolved yet, we're encour- aged that the Ministry of the Environment has continued to pursue the investigation, Western researchers continue to look into sources and impacts, and the plastics manufacturing indus- try is now calling on members to work to keep plastics out of Canada's waterways" A recent announcement by the Canadian Plastics Industry Association (CPIA) identifies that it is now working towards a zero pellet loss HOME PLAN OF THE WEEK /PLAN NUMBER 8-3-242 SPACIOUS SIDE-BY-SIDE DUPLEX The exterior of this spacious side by side duplex Whets numerous details that lend it an ae of elegance, inducting gables, shone based plasters and nutty mullioned windows Inside, the roomy foyer (bantams a mil closet To the len. spacious Mina and dining rooms are Ideally suited for entettaoning, with large windows hon the Imng room overbooking the covered porch and front garden The fining room (ndudes bothun shelves and n buffet, providing extra storage and Wang space. Operations Clean Sweep is an industry program intended to give compa- nies tcx)ls to help them eliminate pellet lass. Peach remains optimistic about the develop- ments.
