July 1 has always been a big
celebration in the Bend.
From the Ecclestone's
opening of the Lakeview
Casino in 1919 to the huge
picnic hampers of fun in the
sun- not much has changed
in that respect.
The beaches have always
been a veritable swarm of
people all day long and all
evening as well in the most
incredible variety of bathing
costume from the striped
suits and bloomers with
sailor blouses of the 1890s to
"Annette Kellerman" one-
piece suits, then considered
very daring indeed. Men
never exposed their torsos;
