Living every moment

Kandis Hodgins is a Grand Bend
local. She recently decided to sign up
for a MS Climb, From October 20 to
November 6th, she will be climbing to
Base Camp of Mount Everest to help
raise money and awareness for MS.
Her mother was diagnosed with MS 16
years ago and Kandla became an avid
MS Bike tour rider and will now take
her fight for research even higher,
"The bike tour is an amazing event
with over 1500 bilters each year, and
4the event seems to be continuing to
grow, I ride in the MS Bike'Ibur from
Grand Bend to London and Back
because biking was always something
'that my mom moved to do, and that was
taken away from her a few years after
she was diagnosed with MS. I also
}
enjoy the energy of all the peo le per
ddpating and volunteering, I t}tdnk it's
':great that so many people come
together to raise money in hopes of
finding a cure for MS. The ride has
helped my mom to continue to feel
inspired by the dedication and deter-
don
eterdon of the bikers that parddpate
year in hopes to help the MS
of Canada become even closer to
finding a cure. My mom was diag-
hosed with MS 18 years ago. Over the
yearn she has continued to lose the

the 16 years, she has remained positive
and strong through all the changes that
have been going on. She always tells
people that she has a life altering dis-
ease, not life threatening. For this rea-
son alone, my mother is my idol. She
is by far the strongest person I know,
and even though each day is so far
from a walk in the park, she fights
through and continues to keep a smile
on her face"
Over the years Kandis has partici-
pated in Read -A Thons, Walk A Thons,
and Bike Tours, always raising money
for the MS Society of Canada, and
always hoping there will be a cure.
"This year I have decided to take my
fundraising to new heights. I will be
climbing just past Base Camp of Mount
Everest in hopes to raise even more
money then I ever have in the past. My
trek will end at around 16,100 ft above
sea levels. I have been told that the
affects the altitude will have on me can
be comparable to what those living
with MS feel like. Tb have even the
slightest idea of what itis my mother
goes through each and every day
would be an unreal experience'
Kandla has decided over the years
to try and live every moment to the
fullest. You never know when some-
thing nit happen, and you won't be
able to do all the things you once
dreamed of. Take advantage of every
opportunity put in front of you, and
remember you can do anything you set
your mind to"

Scatcherd Classic

It was June 15, 1988 and the Scatcherd Classic raised
$25,000 for the Scatcherd's Children's Centre - a wonderful
facility for physically and mentally handicapped children
from the area. The Classic began in 1981 and he Lakeshore
Advance has been taking a look back over those three dec-
ades. In 1988 Darryl Sittler, Paul Henderson, Dave Hutchin-
son, Rob Ramage and Gary Cowan were headliners. Alan
Eagleson was on hand and so was television personality Gary
Allen Price. There were 244 golfers and 32 tennis players par-
ticipated in the tennis tournament that had been part of the
tournament since 1985. Sittler said he did not golf much and
if he got 100 he would be happy. The hockey players talked to
the media about hockey and how important this tournament
was. The tournament was dubbed one of the best in the coun-
try with political and sports personalities on the guest list.
June 7-8 will mark the 30th year for this tournament, raising
more than $1 million for Community Living London and
South Huron as well as Local charities. They hope to raise
$105,000 this year- 30 for the years this Classic has existed
and 75- Scatcherd's age this June birthday.
