her into the back seat of my cruiser,
she managed in turn, to proposition
me, to challenge me to an arm wres-
tling match, and to question my
manhood.
From anyone else, such antics
would have annoyed me but there was
a weird charm about her. So rather
than arrest her for drunk and disor-
derly, I sobered her up.
A few years later, while distributing
business cards to anyone interested in
knowing that 1'd left police work and
become a private investigator, I met
up with Liz again, She hired me
because a drunken lout she didn't
remember sleeping with (but 'that
doesn't mean anything') was after her
hide. I found Liz a safe house, a place
where the low -life pigs who were
always sniffing around her skirts
couldn't find her. And even though
she didn't pay rne, 1 prayed she'd be
okay there, for a while at least.
"1 hear the gears grinding," the
caller said, bringing me back to the
present. "You know who I'm talking
about, don't you?"
"Isn't it 'whom?"'
"What?"
"Isn't it supposed to be, 'do 1 know
'whom' you are talking about?"
1 thought you were a private inves-
tigator, not a wannabe English
teacher,"
"You were saying..."
"Do you know to whom I am refer-
ring or not?"
"You threw me off when you said

her name was, 'Betty: I knew her as
Liz."
"That's what the drinking crowd
called her. Her family called her
Betty."
"And 'you can call me Al."
"What?"
"Paul Simon song:"
"What?"
"Forget it,"
"I already did:"
"You say, 'her family calls her
Betty."
"Except her father. He always called
her Elizabeth:"
"Okay. And you're family?" I fig-
ured that's where the 'familiarity sig-
nal' carne in. I can usually identify sis-
ters, if not by appearance then by
habits and mannerisms. And for sure,
sisters sound like each other, more
often than not.
"You'd never know that we're sis-
ters," she said, like she was disagree-
ing with my unspoken thoughts. "I'm
the complete opposite."
1 nearly asked her if she had a face
like a pug though 1 knew she meant
that unlike Liz, she was a teetotaller.
"Why are you calling me?" 1 said.
"She used to talk about you. 'Only
decent guy she ever met. Her exact
words."
I don't like being buttered up, espe-
cially by people who are trying to get
me to do something for them. Though
I guess by definition that's what
manipulators do.
Tired of the dance, I asked, "What

can I do for you, Ms, Washburn?"
"Washburn's my maiden name."
"So, what do I call you?"
"'Betty's sister' will do fine."
"Seriously? I'm supposed to call you
'Betty's sister'?"
"For now."
1 wanted to hang up but I was curi-
ous about 1.iz. "She in trouble?"
"Probably."

Lakeshore Advance
'like St. Joseph and Area Historical Society is producing an epic
outdoor theatre production this summer on the grounds of
St Peter's Catholic Church, 1,6 km north of St. Joseph on Hwy 21.
The historical larger -than -life play tells of the founding of
St. Joseph and one of its most famous forefathers, Narcisse Can -
tin. Written by Grand Bend playwright Paul Ciufo and directed
by professional director, Duncan McGregor, Narclsse is currently
in rehearsal with a cast of55 actors, choristers and musicians - all
enthusiastic and talented volunteers from the community.
Narcisse, a new play about St. Joseph will be presented for 10
performances between July 19 and 30. Volunteers are essential
in providing our valued audience and visitors with a warm
welcome and kind service that leaves a positive, lasting impres-
sion. In particular, we are looking for those interested in helping
back stage as production assistants or dressers, sewing or altering
costumes, directing traffic, or serving as box office clerks, greet-
ers, ushers and/or historical archive or museum docents.
Come hear about how you can help with this exciting and
rewarding community -wide project during a Volunteer Recruit-
ment and Orientation evening Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Flay
Township Ilan, 10 Victoria St, Zurich at 7p.m. You'll meet new
people, learn new skills and be part of an extraordinary commu-
nity project. If you would like to volunteer but cannot attend this
meeting, please contact Project Co-ordinator - Karen Stewart -
