Huron County supports national obesity strategy
Issues that lead to
obesity cant be
addressed overnight:
Amy MacDonald, dietitian
Lakeshore Advance
The Huron County health Unit is pleased
with the federal government's recent
announcement about addressing childhood
obesity. The government said their initia-
tive is one step in their strategy to help
tackle childhood obesity and promote
healthy eating, physical activity and healthy
weights.
Huron County has one of the highest
adult obesity rates in Ontario. in 2008, there
was a higher proportion of overweight and
obese adults in Iluron County than normal
weight adults. Public Health Dietitian Amy
MacDonald says she hopes the federal
approach k only the beginning. "We know
childhood obesity can lead to adult obesity
which can lead to chronic health conditions,
including cardiovascular disease, type 2
diabetes, and cancer. We want to see a long
term commitment because the issues that
lead to obesity can't be addressed
overnight"
MacDonald says the important part of the
federal government's plan is increasing
awareness that everyone has a stake in
raising healthy kids. "This national
approach will help us all realise it's not just
parents. or schools that need to pay
attention to the issue. We can't just blame
parents. Our choices and our behaviours
are influenced by the environments and
circumstances that surround us. If we work
together to make our communities as
healthy as they can be and make the healthy
choice the easy choice, we can help fight
childhood obesity together."
In Huron County, the health unit works
in a variety of ways to promote healthy eat-
ing and physical activity. Prenatal support

is offered through prenatal classes. Parents
of young children are supported through
the Healthy Babies Healthy Children
program. MacDonald says the health unit
also works with service providers such as
daycares, Early Year Centres and the school
boards to provide resources and supports
to help families make healthy choices.
In making the announcement on March
7, the Federal Minister of Health, Leona
Aglukkaq said, "Everyone has a role to play
in helping children and youth live a healthy
life."
