Lakeshore Advance, 2012-02-15, Page 2County bids adieu to inspector Cheryl Heath SMI Agency Huron County Councillors took time out to bid adieu to Huron County OPP Inspector Dan Grant at their Feb. 9 County Council session. In presenting his annual year-end report, Grant reports that effective Feb. 18, he will be hanging up his cap as detachment commander for the Huron OPP and sail- ing into retirement. Grant, who has been at the post for five years of his 30 -plus year career, notes it has been a job that has faced many challenges, including the shooting death of Const. Vu Pham in March 2010, and the man hunt for murderer Jesse !meson in 2007. Through it all, Grant says the sense of community sup- port in the county has been resounding. "1 thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it," he says, noting there has been "tre- mendous cooperation" from community partners, During a short exchange with councillors, Corm. Bill Dowson (Bluewater) was tunong those who took time out to wish Grunt well. "Congratulations on a Job well done. I have enjoyed a good working relationship with you," says Dowson, not- ing he has appreciated Grant's openness. As for the 2010 crime report, statistics indicate crime is down in most tracked areas. Total calls for service for the year came in at 14,714, up from 2009's 14,604 total, but down significantly from 2008, with 15,347 calls. Grant notes one area where stats show a marked improvement is in motor vehicle collisions as while about 1,050 collisions were reported in 2010, more than 1,100 were investigated in 2009 and 1,250 in 2008. Impaired driving stats show drinking and driving contin- ues to be pervasive in the county as more than 80 charges were laid, down from more than 100 in 2009.1n the traffic complaints' depart- ment, 893 complaints were registered, which is about the average over the past four years. The number of deer - vehicle collisions in Huron and Perth continue to be relatively high at more than 300 in Huron, which is about the average, while Perth had about 150 collisions, up from previous years. In the criminal occur- rences' files, stats show 231 incidents involving domestic violence were reported in 2010, down significantly from 2009's figure of 380. In the drug offences' report, 154 incidents were noted, down from the 2009 figure of 191. Grant's stats showed Intron County's numbers were fairly low in the more serious crimes category as there were 10 incidents of arson, seven robberies, 308 break and enters, and 87 inci- dents of theft over $5,000. Meanwhile, thefts under $5,0011 carne in at 748 inci- dents, while there were 582 mischief complains. Still, says Grant, it has been u difficult year for officers who are continuing to grap- ple with the death of Pham. "The past year has been very challenging for us," he says, noting Phrun's Toss has had a "profound" impact on the department, which is tak- ing on a number of initiatives this year, including increased marine and snow machine patrols, as well as tt crime abatement strategy and par- ticipating in a gang resistance and educational program pilot project. Another Look Representatives of Bron- nenco Construction appeared before councillors to make a plea for another chance at being the chosen contractor for the 31 -unit Huron East Seniors' Complex near Clinton. In making the pitch, com- pany spokesman Raymer Ianzen expressed concern with the process, which he calls "flawed," While councillors dis- cussed the company's con- cerns during a short closed - door session, they ultimately chose to stick to their original choice. In a recorded vote, which all present councillors approved, council stuck with H. Bye Construction for the $4,595 -million project. "We certainly feel we are proceeding appropriately," notes Coun.
