Not all Sarnia-Lambton drivers have
taken the message to heart about the
dangers of texting and driving,
according to local police,
It was a year ago an Ontario law
against driving while texting or talking
on handheld devices came into force,
and a about 49,000 tickets have been
issued provincewide.
"We have been laying charges and
continue to do that," said Sarnia Police
Const. Bill Baines,
The city police service hasn't
calculated how many tickets it has
issued for texting or talking while driv-
ing, but the Ministry of Transportation
says the total across Ontario in the last
year works out to about 147 a day.
"It's still an issue," Baines said,
adding officers don't have to look very
hard to spot a motorist driving with a
cell phone in their hand.
'Ihe fine is $155 and provincial offi-
cials say drivers using a cell phone are
four times more likely to he in a crash.
"When you're behind the wheel of a
vehicle, your number one priority has
to be driving that vehicle," Baines
said.

Lambton OPP are also busy laying
charges under the law, although local
figures aren't available, said Const.
John Reurink.
He added a drop in the overall
number of collisions is a sign the
legislation is working.
"But that's not saying everybody
abiding by the law," he said.
"'Ihe new thing is they're concealing
the device by keeping it down low so it
isn't visible."
And that just takes their eyes off the
road, Reurink said.
"So, they end up all over the road as
a result." pmorden@theobserver,ea
