One of the most successful if not the best meetings, in the brief history cf our Literary Society was held last Fri- day evening when some 150 were in at- tendance. The program which was a contest between Miss Mrytle Beecroft and Mr. W. J. Leggatt, was opened by a comic speech by Angus McKay, follow- ed by music by the mouth organ band of four young gentlemen which was very ably handed, and violin selections by Miss Bertha McKay and Mr. Robert Mowbray. Reading by Miss Ona NI& Cleneghan. The trio and mixed quar- tette were very much enjoyed by all present; recitations by Miss .Annie Laid- law, Nora Johnston and George Penrose; comic song by Mr. Hector McKay; accordion selection by Mr. Robert Car- rick; Mr. D. D. McKinnon's speech was enjoyed immensely, his subject being "Ship building compared with the Church"; a dialogue entitl-d "The Queer Fit"; report of the Clritic by our ...11••••••=11 Ex -president, Mr. Fred Davidson. After the report of the judges, who were Miss Eunice Peddle, Mr. John Gillespie and Mr. Andrew Fox, who gave their decision in favor of Miss Myrtle Beecroft by three points, the meeting wa i closed by singing God Save The King. tasilLERNY. ' On Wednesday evening of last week about seventy-five friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell to spend a social time with them previous to their removal to Wingliam, where they purpose residing. During the evening a fine programme was given, Mr. W. S. King acting as chairman, consisting of the following: Violin selections by Messrs. J. McCor- mick, 3. McKague and Wm. Jenkins, also by the Misses Nettie Bryce ad Leah McCormick; chorus by a number of ladies; song by Mr. Bryce; reading by Mr. J. Linklater, and a speech by Mr. S. Burchill. After the programme was over Mr. Mitchell was presented with a gold mounted umbrella. Mrs. Mitchell received a case of silverwure and little Alfred received a purse. As Mr. Mitchell is in very poor health Mrs. Mitchell replied thanking the very kind friends for their handsome gifts and kindly feelings towards them. The fol- lowing address was read by Mrs. W. S. Linklater and the presentations were made by Mr. and Mrs. D. McCormick. To Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mit.hell and family: Dear friends: -We, your friends am] neighbors, amongst whom you have re- sided for over fdrty years. have learned with sincere regret that you are aboe t to depart from this locality to make your home elsewhere, and take this op- portunity to convey to you an expres- sion of our esteem and regard. Duri s the long period of your residence amongst us you have at all times be -n a kind, agreeable an .1 obliging neigh- bor; ever ready to assist and lend a hewing hand when required. By se ur exemplary conduct and high moral ideals of life your influence has al we ss been for good in the community. We are very sorry that failing strength has made it necessary for you to change your vocation, and we sincerely trust that such change may be most beneficial and that you may be spared many years of usefulness. We are pleased to know that though removed from this com- munity we will still have the pleasure of continuing that intimacy and pleas- ant relationship that have for so many years existed among us. As a slight token of remembrance we would ask you, Mr. Mitchell, to accept this um- brella, and you, Mrs. Mitchell, this case of table silver, and to Alfred this purse of money. We trust that when you have occasion to use them you may have pleasant recollections of your many friends in this locality. And now wishing you health, comfort and hap- piness in your new home we bid you an affectionate farewell. Signed on behalf of your friends. MRS. WM. CHANDLER, MKS: R. DICE.ZON, MRS. D. McCoasincx.
