It has been a
break through first
half of the season
for Huron -Kinloss
Twp. native
Garrett Meurs
who is in the top
five in OHL rook-
ie scoring with 25
points and to top it
off he was select-
ed to the Under -17
World Hockey
Challenge.
The Under -17
tournament starts
on Dec. 29
through to Jan. 4
and will take place
in Timmins. He'll
be playing teams
from every
province in
Canada along with
four international
teams.
For Meurs, rep-
resenting Ontario
is something he is
proud of. Meurs
said he put in a lot
of hard work and
effort, so he could
have a chance to
bring home a gold
medal for his
home province.
"The whole
process has been a
good experience
and it will be
something that I'll
remember my
whole life," said
Meurs. "Just
being able to rep-
resent -my
province against
other Canadian
provinces and
teams. from
around the world,
will be great."
Meurs believes
having OHL expe-
rience going into
the Under -17 will
be key because the
speed of interna-
tional play is on
par to that of the
OHL and the level
of competition
will keep him toe -
to -toe with all of
the participating
teams in the tour-
nament.

Garrett Meurs, of Huron -Kinloss, will be
playing the Under -I,-7. World Hockey
Challenge staring Dec. 29.
Meurs recently
met with the 22
players and coach-
ing staff that make
up the Under -17
Ontario team and
he knows they
have a team that
will compete and
play hard every
game to try and
make it three gold
,medals : in a row
for Ontario.
"It was good to
meet everyone,
the team and tl e
coaches. It looks
like we have a
great " team," said
Meurs. "We were
shown all of the
systems we will
be playing, like
our forecheck,
inzone plays, etc
which we will be
using in the tour-
nament."
Looking at
Meurs' OHL expe-
rience, as far as
living in a bigger
city it's been an
adjustment, but
for the most part
it's been •'a• •good
experience for the
16 -year-old.
Living away
from home for the
first time is differ-
ent, but for Meurs
he has the full
support of his
Plymouth Whalers
team and the fami-
ly he billets with.
For him it's a
home away from
home.
"Living in
Plymouth has
been good, but it
has taken some
getting used to as
far as the big city
goes," said Meurs.
"My billet family
has been really
good, and for the
most part I'm at
the arena with the
team. We usually
do a lot ofstuff
together as a
team."
Meurs' parents
go down to
Plymouth a lot to
see their son play
and support him
and it's something
he has appreciated
in his rookie sea-
son.
"My parents go
down about every
other weekend,"
said Meurs "They
are big support-
ers."
He has also got-
ten a lot of support
from the Huron -
Kinloss communi-
ty. Meurs said
there are usually
Lucknow and
Ripley people at
games he plays in
Kitchener and
Owen Sound to
cheer him on..
The Plymouth
Whalers are cur-
rently. in fourth
place in the
W e s t e rn
Conference and
Meurs knows his
team can .move up
in the standings.
"The season is
going good. We
got off to a good
start and we are
just looking to
keep ° it rolling in
the second half of
the season," said
Meurs. For
myself, I think I
had a good start
and hopefully I
can continue that
as the season pro-
gresses.
Meurs' humble
personality along
with his hockey
talent has made
him a popular
player on his team
and he just wants
to make any team
he plays for better.
"The support
from Ripley and
Lucknow has been
great and every-
where I go people
are always there to
watch and cheer
me on," said
Meurs. "It makes
me appreciate the
fact that people
care about me and
my hockey
career."
If Team Ontario
makes it to the
gold, medal game,
'TSN 11' be' tem
vising the game at
11:30 p.m. eastern
on Jan. 4. All
games will be
broadcast on the
interne starting
with the Tuesday
night game. Go to
