White Christmas experience for Australian teens
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The Canadian
winter has arrived
with blowing wind
and snow and two
Australian girls
involved in the
Lions Club Youth
Exchange are
experiencing it for
the first time:
Nancy and Jack
Cameron _and their
family have been
involved in the
youth exchange for
many years now.
They welcomed
Renae Chapman
and Joannah White
from New South
Wales, Australia,
into•their home and
are giving them the
traditional
Canadian winter
experience.
White arrived on
Dec. 6 and
Chapman arrived
on Dec. 9 and she
experienced her
first snow . storm,
which was an
experience in itself
for her.
"When I first
arrived we drove in
a .snow storm and
that was a little
scary," said
Chapman. "I love
the snow now, but I
thought it was
going to be fluffy,
but I've been told
there are different
types of snow."
Snow and the
traditional white
Christmas is one of
the big reasons the
two Aussie girls
wanted to do their
exchange in
Canada. For
Chapman and
White it was kind
of a shock because
right now it's their
summer and they
are used to temper-
atures in the 40
degree celsius
range.
"Jo and myself
have never seen
snow, so we
thought it would be

pretty cool if we
went somewhere
cold," said
Chapman. "It's a
little different
because everything
is the opposite
from us because
it's olitr summer
right now. We are
missing out on the
beach and surfing,
but that doesn't
matter."
Chapman and.
White have visited
Niagara Falls and
done a lot of shop-
ping • since they
have - been here.
They have also
experienced
.Goderich and real-
ly liked the town
for its interesting
downtown square.
The girls also
experienced their
first hockey game
as they watched a
midget game. Also
to their delight
they saw their first
hockey fight.
"It was crazy
because you don't
expect in your first
hockey . game to
see a fight and
when we got there
they were hitting,
each other all over
the place," said
Chapman. White
mentioned the ' One:..
player received a
red .card, but
Cameron
explained it was ' a
game misconduct,
which is basically
the same thing.
The Cameron
family has enjoyed
the Aussie infusion
that has taken
place in their house
these pastcouple
of weeks and their
outgoing personal-
ities have kept
everyone on their
toes. They will be
missed by the
Cameron family
when they leave
for Owen Sound
and then ` finally
when they head
home on. Jan. 7.
"We know the
value of travel and
the value of being
in another country
and experiencing
new, cultures," said
;Nancy Cameron.
"We •enjoy having
young people stay
with us. ' We have
four children of
our own and it's
just been great
having the girls
here (Chapman
. and White)."
Chapman and
White are in their
graduating year of
high school and
Chapman would
like 'to '`go to uni-
versity to become a

For the two girls
it has been an

and something
they won't soon
