Food Share grateful for community involvement
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The North Huron
Community Food
Share based out of
Wingham is trying
to make people
aware that there
are many people in
the area who need
help and providing
food is a way of
doing that. The
Food Share is
grateful for the
amount of support
they get but want
to get the word out
that people need
donations all : year
round.
The Food Share
has been in opera-
tion for the past 13
years and it was all
started by volun-
teers who just
wanted to help
those in need. The
program serves a
large surrounding
area including:
Blyth; Walton,

Fordwich, Gorrie
and Wroxeter:
Operations manag
er for the Food.
Share, Joyce
Johnston, said they
currently are help-
ing 111 families,
which includes 237
people altogether.
Johnston said it's a
large area they
serve and - they
have appreciated
the amount of sup-
port the area com-
munity has given
them over the
years.
"I must say -the
area community
has been fantastic
for support," said
Johnston. "The

munities have been
great. We have
been getting a lot
of donations in.
The demand is so
great right now
that the donations
go out just as fast
as ' they come in."
Johnston said
their food usage is
up 25 per , cent

lot more people on.
employment insur-
ance this year.
Johnston wants
to get the word out
that there is a lot of
people in . need m
this area and there
are so many of us
that have so much.
Johnston is very
passionate about
what she does and
wants people to
feel like their com-
mnnity is behind
them, no matter
what.
"I think it's
always importan t
to help those who
are less fortunate
than ourselves,"
said Johnston. "It's
a very fulfilling job
and anybody that
volunteers here, it
soon becomes . a
passion for them.
You are just driven
to help and you
just see the grati-

tude on people's
faces when they
come in. It's a
great feeling to
help."
Johnston has
four volunteers
that help her every
year and she said
she would be lost
without their help.
She said they are
often helping out
by putting food on
the shelves four or
five days out of the
week and they love
helping others.
If people are
having a hard time
deciding on what
they should donate,
Johnston suggested
cash donations .are
always welcome;
donating foods that
your fancily would
like; food with pro-
tein `fie beef and
pork; healthy food
that is low in fat or
high in fibre; veg
etables and fruits;
for children, food
that they would
enjoy, like fruit
cups, juice boxes,
granola : bars, etc
and any non-per-
ishable
on-per-ishable foods.
Johnston suggested
that people should-
n't donate any food
that hasn't been
pasteurized or that
comes from a place
•
that hasn't been
inspected.
Basically anything
that comes from a
grocery store is
what people should
bring in.
