Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-12-09, Page 7ci) LCPS gets into the Me To We spirit BY GARi REED Sentinel Staff The Me To We movement has been exploding around North America and the world for the past few years and at Lucknow Central Public School it was no different on Nov. 25. The Grade 7 and 8 students of LCPS kicked off their own move- meat by holding a Me To We assem- bly to get the whole school into the spirit of things.. Me To . We was started by brothers Craig and Mark Kielburger and it is' a family of social enterprises that is challenging notions of con- sumption, and redefining the rela- tionship between business and chari- ty. , Me to We itself is neither ‚a tradi- tional charity nor an ordinary corpo- ration. The goal is to change the world. They are helping Free The Children become sustainable in their work, supporting them in . their goal to end poverty and thus put them- selves out of a job. The LCPS Me To We club pre- sented the school with a presentation of • six countries they were ' looking at where they would choose a vil- lage in one of 'the countries to sup- port. The countries chosen were Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, . China, India, Ecuador and Kenya. The coun- try that was chosen by the school, 'was Sierra Leone. They are still waiting to confirm a country as they sharing the country with Ripley Huron Public School. Every student at the assembly was given a penny and asked to choose the country they would liked to be selected by . dropping a penny in. a box labeled with the country of their choice. The Me To We club wanted to get the school involvedin . the selection process and to get into the spirit of Me To . We. "Today we are looking to make a difference in the world," said Grade 8 student Stacey Whitehead. "There are so many coun- tries iri the world living in poverty in the world and it's just not right. Helping a village in a third world country is some- thing we can do to make the world a better place to live." Grade 7 and 8 teacher and Me To We leader Lee Ann Maki said they wanted to make LCPS- aware of what Me To We is and they decided to kick things off before the Christmas holiday because the Me To We club will be doing a lot of fundraising throughout the school year. The fundraising . won't just go towards the village in Sierra Leone, but the club wants to give towards communi- ty projects. Maki and . the club feel it's just as impor- tant mportant to support • local and global needs. "It's community as well. It's not just about adopting a village in another country to sup- port," said Maki. "If we feel there is something in the community that needs our help, we'll Tundrai se for that as well." "Sometimes you just have to look out your back door to see issues that need help, instead of `looking across the globe," added Whitehead. Excitement for Whitehead and the rest of the group is an understatement for her as she is all enthusiastic to start helping those in need. "We are pumped! I am so excited to get things started," said Whitehead. "We just have to get the rest of the Photo by Gorit Reid Kayla Murray (left) and Jess Atkinson (right) led the charge at the LCPS Me To We club's kick off assembly on Nov. 2S. The assembly was to make the school aware of global and local issues. school excited too, so that's why we are trying to do a big kick off today," added Maki. "I don't think it will be that big of a problem because we have great stu- dent leaders." • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • ••• •• ••••••. • ehrislinow, ihinne." -For those alone- Persons of all ages, divorced, widowed, single, apart, cou p!c unable to be with friends and family.
