Smith is looking for support from Bruce County council
From page 1
Council support is
not an issue once the
election is over,
Smith said, as he
gave a nod of thanks
to Kraemer for step-
ping aside.
"We go through
choices in an elec-
tion. I suspectafter
the vote, now coun=
cil will support me
and support the
committees," he
said.
Still, Kraemer got
another blow when
it came to commit-
tee appointments
and he was turned
down as highways
chair.
He objected to
reappointment to the
board of health,
arguing that in nine
years on council he
hasn't had the
opportunity to chair
a `senior commit-
tee'. -
Brockton Mayor
Charlie Bagnato
backed Kraemer's
request for the high-
ways spot, saying a
similar courtesy as
planning chair was
extended to him
when he lost out on
the Warden's spot in

the last election.
But highways
chair Ron Oswald
refused to budge,
and a show of hands
went four to three
against Kraemer's
request.
Kraemer declined
comment on the
warden election or
committee appoint-
ments, and left when
the moming session
was over. He did not
attend committee
meetings set for the
afternoon.
Inaugural
Completing proj-
ects now in the
works will keep the
county busy for
2010, according to
newly -inaugurated
Bruce County
Warden Mike
Smith.
Saugeen Shores
Mayor Mike. Smith
listed projects in , all
departments from
highways to eco-
nomic development,
but said an afford-
able housing project
is closest to his
heart.
"For me, on a per-
sonal level, the
affordable housing
unit which is going
on in Saugeen
Shores (is) very
important," Smith
said.
"We know we've
got an issue with
that. We hope if this
thing goes well it's
an example we can
use in other munici-
palities."
Smith pointed to
the budget as the
biggest challenge
for the year, predict-
ing the county won't
go unscathed as the
federal and provin-
cial governments
tackle their deficits.
"The Prime
Minister and the
federal government
(said) 'use that stim-
ulus money or lose
it' so they're starting
to look for ways to
cut back on those
deficits," Smith
said.
"We won't be
unaffected for sure."
