End of an era for historical
The tall tree that stood outside the South Kinloss Presbyterian Church for almost
100 years was cut down on Oct. 29.The tree has been around, dote the new church
was constructed in 1912 but the large tree had grown rotten in places and people
were afraid it might crash through the urge stained Mass window in the front. It
was also too close to power Ilnes•The people of the Church are hoping to turn the
stump (below) into a cross. the tree was cut down by Dennis Bowman of Hary
Bernard Thea.

worried .about interfering
in the market place.
Kincardine Mayor Larry
Kraemer has questions
about how intensification
requirements in the official
plan will affect future pro-
posals for estate -type
homes.
The county is setting
subdivisiondensity levels
too high, Kraemer said. He
wants more flexibility in
deciding what kind of
housing goes where.
"I don't like getting in
• the way of development.
At the same time we do
need more _ smaller homes
and more affordable
homes, that is true,"
Kraemer said.
"But I'm not a big fan of
getting in the way of stuff
that makes economic
sense."
"That 6.1 homes per acre
(recommended density) is
about 7,000 square feet for
the whole lot. If you put a
two or three thousand
square foot home on it, you
have no lot," he said.
"I'd like to see a little bit
more flexibility."
There is demand for
large single family homes
and luxury' condos,
Kraemer said.
"I think that this area
doesn't have very much of
that type of building. The
customers for it want more
than a three story build-
ing.
uild-
,--.
ing.The economicsof it is
more of a six or seven
storey building from my
understanding," he said.
Kraemer wants to make
sure county official plan
objectives aimed at provid-
ing affordable housing and
preventing sprawl don't
discourage investment or
close off the higher end of.
the housing market.
Giant hogweed
The fight against Giant
Hogweed is not a county
battle, according to Bruce
county agriculture, ue, tourism
and planning stag.
Municipalities are peti-
tioning to have Giant
Hogweed put on the nox-
ious weed list. At the same
time they want Bruce
county to take responsibili-
ty for getting rid of the
increasingly -common
weed that is showing up in
large stands along streams
and riverbanks.
But Giant Hogweed is
not listed as an agricultural
pest and there is little indi-
cation the province will
change that ruling, said
county planner Chris
LaForest.
At the same time, "the
county. does not have an
existing function...to have
property standards
bylaws' LaForest said.
"It's simply the job of
the local municipalities,"
he said. "Sc) our advice to
them is (to add Giant
Hogweed) to the (property
standards) list."
