Trip to CN Tower was "monumental" experience
One of the Important Family Events for the
Thrice clan this summer was a trip to
Toronto. Like most people, I like the "idea"
of Toronto as long as I don't have to drive
through it, visit it or think about it in any
way. Unfortunately, it would have been
impossible to see. the CN Tower without it.
For those of you not in the know, the CN
Tower is a tourist attraction which holds
the record as the world's tallest free
standing structure. The difference
between a "free standing structure" and

has had MILLIONS of people go through it
and they are all safe. No accidents!"
R -Rebuttal -"Dad, if millions of people
have been on that elevator, it's probably all
worn out by now. We could all die."
R -Reason- "Honey, being up there is no
different than being down below. You
still have a solid floor to stand on."
R -Rebuttal- "If it's all the same,
then I'll just stay down here."
T -Threaten- "Look kid, I just
paid A HUNDRED BUCKS for a glo-
rified elevator ride so I can guarantee you that you
WILL be going :up."
C -Cry (at the top of her voice)-
"DDDAAAAAAADDDDDDEEEEEEEE
PLEEEEASE DON'T MAKE ME GO UP
THEItE! N00000000!".
B -BRIBE -(This is where Mom steps in to save
the child's life.) "Honey, if you go up to the top of
the free standing structure, I111 buy you some very
expensive souvenir jewelry:"
I hate the bribe step. It makes me feel so. cheap.
The entire event turned : out to be a classic
DWSAI-IHTTWA.GSHU adventure. (Dad Was
Surprised At How High The Tower Was And Got
Scared Halfway 1Jp.)
My Wife: "I've never seen a grown man cry like
that..."
Me: "Do still get the expensive souvenir jew
elry?"

a "building" or a "pylon" is unknown to me. Ido
know that it would not be as exciting to drive four
hours to visit the world's tallest pylon.
We arrived' and bad our first "monumental"
experience which was paying the monumental fee
of one hundred dollars just to get through the
front doors. Luckily, it wasn't until we were inside
that my daughter informed me she wouldn't be
going to the top of the tower via the glass : eleva-
tor. In fact, she wasn't even sure about lingering
on the main floor. •
Now I know that a lot of you are thinking:
"Man, if I was taking the whole family on vaca-
tion and one of : my kids` threatened to ruin it, I
would lose my mind!" But the Thrice family : is
different. As you can tell by my weekly column,
we are experts in the realm of parenting and in
this particular situation, we did not panic. instead
we used the proven RRRRTCB method of negoti-
ation.

"It' a very democratic process,"
said Whyte. "Some of .the people
who come may not know the can-

come and share' their views on
things."
Each candidate is given 10 to
15 minutes to outline their inten-
tions before members cast their
votes.
Whyte said this is often the
longest - part of the night, with
about 800 members voting at the
