The house of Ron and Heather Stewart was full of smoke and the rear of downstairs and the upstairs were both heav- ily damaged by the fire when the fire department arrived. Firefighters were on scene until 1 a.m. Monday morning. Fortunately the Stewart family was not home at the time of the fire. By accounts from the fire department, the fire was apparently caused by a plug-in air freshen- er that had run dry of fluid. Fire Chief Peter Steer recommends checking these plug -ins regularly. For the time being the Stewart family has been staying in a recreational vehicle (RV) in their backyard and the family still don't know the exact eost of the fire damage to the house. Bridges to fill gaps in Bruce County trails systems BY PAT HALM Special to the Sentinel Three gaps in the Bruce County trails system will be bridged and one of the best views along the multi -use recreational trail could soon be re opened. A $170,000 contract will see the final. phase of work to put new decking and railing on the Mill Creek bridge in Port Elgin and two bridges in . Paisley. One of the Paisley bridges is a trestle bridge that runs high over the Teeswater River, offering a unique view of the sur- roi ndings. Pser groups and a utili- ty ompany will cover most of the cost, with the remainder corning .from county reserve funds. Work is expected to begin this week. Bruce county's rail trail is used by pedestrians, ATVers and . snowmobil- ers. They've all had to make extended detours while the bridges . were closed for safety reasons. • Lighthouses The Stokes Bay light marker on Lake Huron is the latest marine icon fac=. ing new ownership. The federal government is getting rid of lighthous- • es, said county planner Chris LaForest, and Bruce County is looking at ways to make sure .they don't disappear. Bruce County • Museum. is interested in taking the Stokes Bay light as part of its museum collection, LaForest said. He warned county councillors that the federal government is maxim; quickly on divest- ing lighthouses, and the Museum is prepared to move equally quickly. The county lists light- houses as one of its 'must see' tourist attractions. Most are in federal or municipal ownership. The federal government and Saugeen Shores are already negotiating over Chantry Island and its lighthouse. Bruce County doesn't object to municipalities taking ownership of light- houses. 'But it's worried the federal government may sell them off fast, leaving little time to save lighthouses that are part of the county's heritage • and prime tourist attractions. Continued on page 3
