New restaurant in Kinloss waiting a long time for sign permit
There's a brand
new restaurant now
in Kinloss -
Puddly's Corner
Take-out Restaurant
- where Silver Lake
Fitness and the old
Silver Lake
General Store used
to be. The only
problem is, it's hard
to tell they're open.
Owner Shelagh
Koberinski has been
waiting over two
months for a high-
way sign permit
from the Ministry of
Transportation
(WO).
"Exposure to
Hwy. 9 is impera-
tive for this place to
survive," said
Kobennski "Due to
the setbacks that
take effect once a
landmark is gone,
the small building
where Puddly's
resides is tucked
behind a big maple
tree. People travel-
ing between
Walkerton and
Kincardine have
said to me they
don't know my
business is open.
I've missed July
travelers and 1 can't
afford to have. my
August revenue
impacted so drasti-
cally"
Koberinski was
told when she called
the MTO that they
are experiencing a
heavy workload.
The MTO contact
was on vacation
until Aug. 17.
Out of despera-
tion, last week
Koberinski decided
to take matters into
her own hands and
stand out at the cor-
ner in bikini with
sandwich board
signs.
"Some stopped
and started a peti-
tion on our behalf.
Many asked. why I
don't just go ahead
and put a sign up
without a permit,"
said Koberinski.
"Some even told me
that everyone else
does and that M'PO
doesn't check any-
way, but this restau-
rant was developed
under a government
program and I'm
trying to do every-
thing by the book."
Puddly's was set
to open July 5, but
construction was
delayed by three
weeks it May over 3
construction permit
confusion.
"Any new build-
ing. on a provincial
highway ' needs an
additional construc-
tion permit from
MTO but we
weren't informed of
this until , we weie
about to pour the
pad," said
Koberinski. "It was
really frustrating to
have a permit in
hand from Matt
Farrell (H -K chief
building official),
only to be told to
stop and wait for
O corridor man-
agement to process
another one."
Koberinski's July
grand opening was

bumped to Aug. 1,
which has now been
bumped to Labour
Day weekend, when
vacationers are
going home.
"I can't officially
open without a sign
on the building and
I was counting on
the summer income
to see me through
till January. Now I
don't know if I can
be a full -year facili-
ty," said Koberinski.
Puddly's Corner
was started in May
2009 under a
Service Canada
stimulus program to
encourage local,
small business
development,
employment and
construction.
"The SEB l Employment
Benefit)
Benefit) program
has been fantastic,'
said Koberinski.
"They walked . me
through how to do a
business plan, what
I neededto
research, -how to
forecast
revenue/expenses
and• they monitored
me monthly to
make sure things
were going well."
Puddly's Corner
plans to be a friend-
ly, affordable, cen-
tral stopping spot
for travelers and the
community.
"The ironic thing
here is I have sever-
al publicly funded
government. agen-
cies helping me
open a business, but
another government
is ° Huran-B
agency (MTO) pre-
venting me from
doing so," said
Koberinski. "My
husband Art and I
knew an eating
place was needed
on the comer but
statistically, only
one out of six new
restaurants survives
in the first year. It's
an extremely risky
business."
Menu and hours
are still being deter-
mined and will
evolve based on
customer ' feedback.
"Our aim is to be
100 per centlocally
sourced, developed,

ed,"
Ko
Puddly's also
employs seven local
residents and neigh
bourhood kids.
.Situated close to
Silver Lake Tent
and Trailer Park,
Silver Lake Church
Camp, Holyrood
General Store,
Fisherman's Cove
and BlackHorsg
Golf and Country
Club, Koberinski
said there is a real
reed for an eating
option close by.
"Hopefully next
year Puddly's can -
fully service their
guests._ and the
tourists to our mat.
community," said
Koberinski.
