Last weekend I flew to Vancouver to help my
best man celebrate his fortieth birthday. I call him
my best man, knowing full well that it's been fif-
teen years since he fulfilled that role. Being a best
man is a special job., like being: a sheriff or a
colonel. And it usually sticks with you for the
rest of your life.
The cool thing about this trip was that it
was just me, Van the best man (this is his real
name) and our mutual friend Sean (pro-
nounced "Shawn") --three forty year old guys
on the loose in Vancouver for a weekend. No.
kids, no wives, no rules... cuz forty year
old men don't need rules.
Sean: "Well, men, welcome to
Vancouver. What should we do
tonight?" .
Me: "Let's play it by ear and tool around. Forty
year old men don't need itineraries."
Van: "I don't think anyone says "play it by ear"
or "tool around" anymore."
Me: "Forty year old . men don't care about those
rules."
So we spent the evening getting lost in traffic
and wandering around. Granville Island.
Van: "Let's buy smoothies:
Me: "Ask them to throw in whey protein."
Sean: "Forty year old men don't worry about
their health."
Me "True, but forty year old men also want to
be fifty year old men someday."
Sean: "What else should we eat?"
Me: "How about that pizza with the whole
wheat and flax seed dough?"
Van: "Forty year old men, LOVE being regular!"
The next day we went fishing: To celebrate
Van's : birthday.

Me: "Do forty year old men wear life jackets?
Van: "Probably not."
Boat Rental Guy: "Here are your oars.
Remember not to feed the bear."
Sean: "Bear?"
Boat .Rental Guy: "Yeah, there's a bear
around here. He's pretty harmless."
Me: "You mean, he's pretty harmless SO
FAR."
Sean:. "Yeah, I heard that forty year old
meat is especially tender and tasty to
bears."
Van: "Not that we couldn't fend
him off, because we could."
Van: "Do bears swim?"
B.R.G. "This one does."
Me: "I think I-'ll.grab a life jacket."
Sean: "Me too."
That night, •we had : an actual birthday party for
Van, where ail of his friends came over, ate more
pizza and talked into the night.
Me: "How late do you think it will go tonight?"
Sean: "Who cares? Forty year old men can stay
up as late as they want to!"
While this is true, forty year old men will still
have to get up to pee in the middle of the night,
even if they go to bed at 4:00 a.m. Forty year old
men may end up being grumpy the next day but
that's okay because they are forty and can choose
whichever mood they please.
Monday night, I arrived home:
My Wife: "Well, how was your trip? Did you
act your age?"
Me: "Honey, I'm forty. You don't need to
worry."

Lock it or lose your car say OPP
The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) are teaming
up to .remind drivers to "Lock It or Lose It".
"A professional can steal your vehicle in just 30
seconds - without the key," said Inspector Mark
Alien, OPP crime prevention section. "The goal .of
the Lock It or Lose It crime prevention program is
to encourage drivers to take a few simple precau-
tions that will help protect their vehicles and con-
tents from theft."
An unlocked door or an open window is an invi-
tation to thieves. The goal of the "Lock It or Lose
It program reminds drivers to always:
- Roll up their vehicles' windows
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Lock their doors
- Pocket their keys
In 2007, 146,142 vehicles were stolen in Canada.
"Auto theft costs Canadians more than $1 billion
every year," said Rick Dubin, vice-president,
Investigations IBC. "About half of all stolen vehi-
cles are used to commit another crime or are driven
- often recklessly - for simple purposes of trans-
portation."
The key to protecting your vehicle and its con-
tents is in your hands. Keep yourself from becom-
ing an easy target by properly securing your vehi-
cle. Remember: "Lock It or Lose It!"
