Porter Holdings wants a chance, at least, to bid on providing fure hydrants to the municipality. Porter spoke to Huron -Kinloss 'Iwp, council on June 15, saying it's frustrating that he can't competitive- ly bid on a contract in the township even though he is a resident and a tax- payer here. All he needs is council's approval of the Brigadier hydrant distributed through Porters. John Shurr, who was on hand with Porter and is a sales representa- tive for CLOW Canada, whole- saler of the Brigadier, brought a hydrant to show council and said this model meets all the specifica- tions and require- ments outlined in contracts for the J r % •i 1 '•. "It's a stur- dy hydrant, made to last more than 50 years if proper- ly maintained. The valves are made to standard and are rated to 250 psi." He said the com- pany has been sell- ing hydrants to the Municipality of Bluewater, A ' I. Municipality of Kincardine and Town of Minto. "We provide cer- tified training for volunteer fire- fighters, at no cost to the municipali- ty," said Shurr: Mayor Mitch Twolan said coun- cil would not be granting approval that night because further discussion is required. He referred to a letter from the public • r• a ‚‚9,., • 1 I• I I• I 1•/.• 4• 4'. 1,' 1 A / • r r ► • works director (Hugh Nichol), stating that he is happy with the product now used by the township. 'Nolan. suggest- ed Porter contact the contractors who are bidding on the projects. Porter said he has discussed the issue with the township engineer, B.M. Ross and Associates, and the water operator, Veolia, and with local contractors,. and they have no problem with another hydrant , supplier. 'T'he problem is .that the public works director has a preference, which should not have anything to do with it," said Porter. "I'm a tax- payer here in the municipality and I can't bid on a job here?" Porter currently has two hydrants on Clyde Street in Lucknow, which were . done through a contrac- tor, not the munic- ipality. Shurr said the problem is that the current specifica- tions for hydrants have been estab- lished through the '; -: current supplier out of Port Elgin. "We're getting black -balled by a guy in Port Elgin who doesn't live here and is not a taxpayer," said Porter. •
