Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-06-24, Page 5The early morning is key for good travel
Last weekend I planned an early morning trip to
Toronto. As we live quite a distance from the city,
I worked things backward and figured I had to get
out of bed no later than 4:45 am.
Unfortunately, the Penguins were playing the
Wings for somebody's cup and while I'm not
much for hockey, my wife- decided to stay up
as late as necessary to witness the end of the
game. My evening went something like this:
-10;30-Teeth are brushed and I am lying in
badcI can bear my wife- cheering like a loon
downstairs and I laugh quietly to myself.
She is so cute when she. is cheering peo-
ple that can't even hear her.
10:454 am asleep.
11;074 surmise that the game is now
over because there is a host of lights on upstairs,
including the ._bathroom, the hallway and our bed
_room.There may even;., be • a few flashlights
involved for all I know because they're not the
soft, friendly lights that 1 installed: They are
vicious lights that stab into my eyes through my
squinty eyelids., I slowly roll over and continue my
sleep.
11:154 - wake up to find my wife wandering
around our room with her electric toothbrush in
her mouth. ZZZRRRRWOWOWOWOWR-
RRRRZZZZZZZZZ. Wander. Wander. Wander.
I don't know what she hoped to find or why :she -

had to find it while cleaning her teeth. Perhaps she
was trying to lure mosquitoes and bumblebees out
of hiding. Eventually she wandered out again.
11:32 -"What a game!" she says as she climbs
into my bed. I hope that by not responding,
she'll realize that I'm asleep and stop talking
to me. "Are you all ready for tomorrow? Are
you excited about going? What time is the
alarm set for?" She calls my bluff and I have
to answer: "Four forty-five." '
Her: "Wow. That's early. Are you
sure that you'll hear it?"
Me: "At this rate, I won't have to."
11:40 -Ili order to go to sleep,
someone needs to start kicking the
sheets until they lay the right way on
her legs. I practice the art of sleep -crying.
12:21 -SHE PUTS. HER ICE COLD FEET
INSIDE MY LEGS.. This is not okay and I com-
municate that immediately. •
4:40-1 wake up,before the alarm and briefly con-
sider turning it up to full volume and letting- it go
off in five minutes. But she looks so darned cute as
she sleeps. I now understand why husbands usual-
ly .:die first: the - prospect of uninterrupted slumber
is too good to pass up.
