4-H Wawanosh club ham it up with a Hannah Montana hoe-down
The Balanced Bodies started to shake
it up before meeting four even started
on June 12 by doing Hannah Montana's
Hoe -Down Throw -Down on the
Jefferson's deck. Ellen and Reba
Jefferson, the youth leaders, also led a
quick water relay before the members
went inside where Melissa Higgins,
president, led the pledge.
Since the first topic of the meeting
was milk products, it was fitting that
the rollcall question Melissa asked
was: "What dairy products have you
consumed today?" The members gave
a variety of combinations, then leader
Eileen George explained that the calci-
um in milk is essential .for bone growth
and muscle movement. She also talked
about the other nutrients in milk,
including Riboflavin and Vitamin D.
The members divided into groups and
put together quick skits on different
issues surrounding milk products, such
as lactose intolerance.
The club then moved on to talk about
what they should be doing in their
books. Eugenia Pentland and Maisy
Jefferson read the minutes from the last
two meetings. Personal reflections on
healthy living are also part of the
requirements and Brianna Yuill,
Jeanette and Hilary Schramm, and
Meagan Higgins shared theirs for that
week. The members were also to have
their planting records up to date and
have a food and activity tracking chart
for several days filled in. While the
members went outside for a garden

Bette MacLeod enjoyed being treated
to lunch and a visit from her daughter-in-
law Diane McLeod and her friend Pam
Timber, of Toronto, on Tuesday.
Jim and Fran Farrell visited recently
with Derk and Lillian ; Logtenberg, of
Goderich and also with Brian Gamble, of
Tiverton.
St. Andrew's : United Church, of
Ripley, celebrated their anniversary serv-
ice on Sunday with Betty Elliott as guest
speaker. The Middlecamp men and fam-
ily and Amy Snobelen were guest musi-
cians and . provided excellent entertain-
ment for all in attendance.
We extend our sympathy to the family
of Lloyd Worthington who passed away
on Saturday. Many will remember him
as a the bank manager in Ripley for many
years. Also to the families who also
have recently lost a- loved one.
We are happy to report that Olive
Hughes arid Harvey Nicholson have
returned home from the hospital and at
this time good well wishes are being sent
to those who still are.. in hospital.
Congratulations to Gabrielle Finnie

tour and to play dragon, led by Ellen
and Reba Jefferson, the leaders
checked over the books. Upon return-
ing inside, several members discovered
they had won prizes for being caught
up.
Next, Eileen talked about health
esteem. She asked the members what
they could do to have positive images
of themselves: Suggestions included
eating healthily, exercising and giving
compliments to others. To practice
this, the members all got a sheet taped
to their back and: went outside where
the other members wrote positive
things about them. It was a great exer-
cise in confidence boosting. • ;
The final topic of the night was how
to read food labels. Mary Ellen Foran

quickly reviewed the different parts
and then divided the members into
groups which were each given a set of
food labels to rate. The members did
this and presented their findings to the
group. The things they looked at
included calories, fibre, fat, vitamins
and minerals. Some were surprised at
what they found, including that some
crackers have hardly any fibre.
Thankfully, the cheese and crackers
provided by Sophie Jefferson, Jeanette
and Hilary Schramm were full of fibre
and calcium. Melissa Higgins closed
the meeting with the pledge before the
members dug in.
