Should I get him some power tools, a gift certificate or another tie? It's a conundrum for me, but I know I'll fig- ure it out before Sunday. Getting my dad something for Father's Daywon't be as hard as I think because it will make me think of what my father has given to me over the years. He was there for all my early morning hockey practices, my first soccer tryouts and all of the countless things that come with having boys. I know I must have been a bandfill, but being a twin l'Yn sure it was twice the load of work. I don't say these things all of the time and writing it down for people to read, shows how: important my dad is. to me and I'm sure he knows it. t don't take for granted the fact that my dad was there for me becausenot everyone has that luxury. Having that game of catch, going camping or just going for a drive were just some of the small things that made my childhood great. I was watching Coach's Corner the other night and Don Cherry said that parents give up part of their lives when they have children in sports and the same goes for my family. I really appreciate the: amount of time, support and money my parents put into me. playing sports because it reallyshaped my char- acter and personality. It made me a better person as a whole. Living in Lucknow has rade it a lot easier to see my family for those special occa- sions ; as well, since I'm only about an hour away from my hometown of Owen Sound. Before I was in Viand Lake, which is way up north and I only made it back for Christmas. Being closer to home is always a good thing in my. books. This Father's Day I'll be sure to give my dad .a hug and ask ,him if he read my column. Just to see what he thought. I just hope whenever I have kids, that I'mn half the father my dad was to me. Lucknow does its commti.nitproud Dear Editor, It has taken me awhile to write the Sentinel, regarding the benefits of liv- ing in small town Ontario. Especially Lucknow and the value of local busi- nesses. In December 2008, my son Ryan was visiting his grandma arid of course my mom, Margaret, on a break between exams from the University of Waterloo. I was travelling on business in Pittsburgh, PA and received a phone call from Ryan, that went something like this: Ryan - "Dad, the car won't start?". Dad - "Ryan, do you have any money with you? - which of course I knew the answer. All parents of uni- versity/college children know, that whatever monies they have, it is not going for car repairs. Ryan - "No, now what do I do?" Dad - "When do you have to be back in Waterloo?" Ryan - "Not for a couple more days" Dad - "Okay, call or go see Montgomery Motors, have them repair the car. Call me back with the total and I will call them with my credit card information." A couple of hours later .Ryan calls me backwith the total repair cost. It is $o - no charge. The two mechanics arrive at the house, troubleshoot and correct the problem with $0 - no charge. As with the typical Lucknow winters of late, Ryan rammed the car through grandma's . snow drift in her driveway and activated the fuel shut- off switch - or that is the story I was told. My first thought is one of the rea- sons I have many fond memories of growing up in Lucknow, are the bene- fits of small town local businesses. This is why I continue to live in small town Ontario, although not Lucknow, but it's very similar in many ways.. So in closing a late thank you to Montgomery Ford and all of their staff and to the readership, don't forget to supporfall of the local Lucknow busi- nesses.
