Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-06-03, Page 6Instruction manuals on putting together
tools isn't something men need, yeah right.
I love being a guy _ because it gives me an excuse
to do guy things. For instance, my buddy Ric and I
bought a leaf sucker/blower at an auction a " little
while ago. When we opened the box, we noticed
the instruction. manual and had a hearty man -
laugh! Silly people who write User's Manuals
for guy tools! Why give us a bunch of rules for
using the sucker/blower thingy when we're
just going to figure out how it works on our
own? And as long as we have an accurate pho-
tograph on the side of the box, we can even put
it together without any help!
We decided to test our new purchase
on ` the two -foot pile of leaves in. Ric's
back yard. According to the manual, we
should have waited until the leaves were
perfectly dry but it had already been two years....
Testing went like this:
4:00 -Met Ric in his backyard and sized up his
pile of leaves
4:12 -Considered new poses to strike as we con-
tinued to size up bis pile. It was hot and neither of
us wanted to work.
4:13 -Found the leaf sucker in Ric's shed.
4:14 -Got all the plastic tubes hooked up.
4:16 -Stared at the picture on the side of the box.
Realized that we put it together wrong, Staall
over.
4:23 -Yanked on the pull -start.
4:24, 4:25, 4:26 -Yanked onthe pull -start.
4:27 -Ric noticed the "choke" setting on the pic-
ture and suggested I try it.
4:28 -Leaf sucker roared to life and consumed
Ric's work. gloves.
4:29-I - applied 'our hungry leaf sucker to the pile
of semi -dry leaves.
4:3Q -Leaves disappeared at an alarming(ly slow)
rate.
4:32 -Leaf sucker made this sound:
"Wump." Then stopped working.
4:35 -Ric grabbed a screwdriver and eager-
ly began to take our investment apart.
4:36-I noticed that, in his haste to
open up the leaf sucker, Ric had
dumped a pound of wet leaf crud on
my shoes.
4:38 -Ric noticed that the afore-
mentioned crud did not come from
the leaves, but from his doggSophie.
4:39-I expressed my dismay.
4:42 -We continued our leaf -sucking exercise.
4:44-Wump
4:49-Wump
4:53-Wump
4:57 -We continued to suck up leaves until one of
us realized that it was almost dinner time. Not
wanting to leave a job half done, we kicked the rest
of the leaves around the lawn :until there was an
even displacement.
5:01 -We high-fived each other and performed.
one last job: the traditional "sucking up the Users
Manual And Shredding It Into A Million Pieces"
Of course we saved the box. It never hurts to
have a picture...
