Township of Huron -Kinloss
Recycling bins back in town
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
Accompanied by several residents of
Lucknow, Mary Lou Raynard spoke to
Huron -Kinloss Twp. Council at its May
4 general committee , meeting, where
they came to a resolution to return the
recycling bins back to Lucknow, at the
town shed.
The bins were removed from behind
the Bank of Montreal by the municipal-
ity of Huron -Kinloss and not Bruce
Area Solid Waste Recycling, (BAS')
as stated in the Sentinel on April 15.
Abuse by some _.people throwing
garbage in the bins, was the reason for
the bins:being removed.
The only things allowed in the bins
are non -soiled plastic grocery bags,
retail bags #2 and #4, which includes
bread bags, milk bags and shopping
bags. The bins are also for wide mouth
plastic tubs #1 and #6.
Raynard and company were 'aware of
why the bins were taken away, = but did-
n't think it was acceptable that because
of a• few bad people the whole village
of Lucknow had to suffer.
Huron -Kinloss Twp. Council had
made a concession in putting bins at the.
Kinloss landfill, but for Raynard and ..
many residents of Lucknow, that con-
cession was not feasible or reasonable.
"We aren't impressed that we have to
drive all the way to the Kinloss dump,"
said Raynard. "We have a lot of people
(seniors) that don't have vehicles to
take their bags to the Kinloss site."
Councillor Lillian` Abbott did say the
Kinloss landfill site was an interim
solution as the site was closing in
October And that council would have to
make a decision on where to take them.
Raynard made $he plea to try the bins .,
back in Lucknow and see how it goes
because for her it was the .only solution
to the problem.
"We are flexible with the hours and
maybe it's time our tax dollars started
working for us," said . Raynaud:
This started a discussion by council
to try and resolve the situation.:
Council later agreed to place the
recycling bins at the Public Works. shed
from Monday through Thursday
between the hours of 7 'a.m. - 4 pm;
"Let's try the shed `" and see how
hings : go . from .there," said Huron-
Kinloss' Twp. Mayor Mitch Twolan. "If
you abuse it, .you'll lose it."
