Silver Lake was a big part of the communityin and around the Kinloss area. They helped put together a lot of community events and given their support to a lot of the clubs in the area. There are other factors that went into the deci- sion, such as a difficulty in getting new members who S could bring new ideas to the club. "A lot of the young peo- ple move away these days and they have other inter- ests. A lot of the, younger generations work away from home," • said Erlma Haldenby an executive member of the Silver Lake Women's Institute. "Most of us have been recycled through the executive and we're just tired. After a while it just came down to a couple of us trying to come up with ideas and it just wasn't enough." Councillo rs didn't make any cuts to the draft budg- et' in spite of .earlier con- cerns about new staffing costs. Provincial directives give : the county little choice about filling some of the positions, said Warden Bill Goetz. "So we do the best we can. I think Bruce County has always been noted to move ahead and I think they're doing that again," Goetz said. And delaying infrastruc- ture work is a false econo- my, he .said. "I don't think you can save a ,dollar here and think you're going to catch up next year, because it costs you twice as much to catch up." The increase per $100,000 of assessment is just under council's three per cent target at 2.89 per cent, but reassessment puts the overall tax increase compared to last year at 4.69 per cent. Reassessment hiked the average value of a single family home in Bruce County to $167,000 - a $12,000 increase from last year. "The difficulty this year is the reassessment," said Sauge,en Shores Mayor Mike Smith. The increase proposed for the 2009 budget amounts to $23.83 more on an average assessment, putting the total county share at $750 for a home assessed at .$167,000. "1 thought there would have been a lot more ques- tions," clerk Bettyanne Cobean said after the rela- tively brief budget review.
