Goal of meeting to re-train skilled workers
BY PAT HALPIN

Bruce Power
CEO Duncan
Hawthorne was
among 300 indus-
try representatives
meeting in
Windsor last week-
end to look at ways
to help stagnant
manufacturing in
the province.
The goal is . to
encourage compa-
nies idled by . the
slow economy to
re-train skilled
workers and re -tool
plants to supply
growth industries,
Bruce Power
spokesperson Ross
Lamont told Bruce
county council.
With more than
100 .nuclear proj-
ects in the works
around the world,
nuclear is one of
the growth indus-
tries. Renewable
energy like ` wind
turbines . is another.
Combined, that
means high
demand for parts.
Stalled industries
in Ontario *need to
re -orient their staff
and capacity to
supply the growth
industries, .
Lamont
said.
"With the vision
that we have for
new and refur-
bished units across
Ontario and ;across
Canada, it's going
to tad our current
supply chain to be
able : to provide all
the parts and
equipment that's
going to be
required for that,"
he said.
The Windsor
conference was a
step in figuring out
how to produce
more parts using
Ontario manufac-
turers.
"(It talked) about
the types of things
we will need and
how manufacturing
capability could
get aligned to be
able to provide
some of the goods
and services that
we would require
for that nuclear
build," Lamont
said.
The Ontario
economy is chang-
ing, Lamont said,
and Bruce Power
wants to be part of
a turnaround that
will help Ontario
come out of reces-
sion.
Beef prize
Bruce County is
taking some of the
credit. for an award
earned: by a Grey
county company.
West Grey
Premium Beef took
two awards for its
steaks in , a national
industry competi-
tion.
Thebeef was
raised in Bruce
County, said Bruce
Warden Bill Goetz.
The award con-
firms the county's
title as the heart of
beef country - and
home of the best
beef in Canada, he
told Bruce county
councillors.
"It puts Bruce
County on n the
map. We always
thought we had the
bragging rights for
the best beef in the
country and now
we can prove it,"
Goetz said.
Arran-Elderslie
Mayor Ron
Oswald gave a
thumbs up to the
awards, saying the
beef entered in the
competition - and
the company own-
ers - are from his
municipality.
Durham -based
West Grey
Premium Beef won
gold and platinum
awards in competi-
tion against more
than 100 other
entries in judging
for 12 prizes in the
national contest.
Performance •
Bruce Power hit
a new high for rev-
enue and profit in
2008.
The company
parry
had $2 billion a in
revenue last year
for. a$572.:million
before-taxp rofit
spokesperson Ross
Lamont told Bruce
county council dur-
ing a nionthly
update; session.
Most of that
money , was put
back into refur-
bishment and
improved produc-
tion.
"There's no sub-
sidy" on refurbish-
ment Lamontsaid
in reference to crit-
icism by nuclear
opponents about
refurbishment
costs.
The production
figures prove: the
business case for
refurbishment,
Lamont said.

increased its pro-
duction by 1.9 per
cent last year while
Unit 5 saw a three
per cent increase.
The Unit 5
improved produc-
tion alone is equiv-
alent to Owen
Sound's annual
power needs.
"Not only was it
good technical
work to restart
those units in that
there was a lot of
-life left in them,
but it was a good
business case,"
Lamont said.
"The units at
Bruce A, the two
that we restarted,
were almost four
per cent better than
the year a before in
terms of produc-
tion. They
their targets.":
`Bruce Power has
put $2.6 billion
into refurbishment
so far. Lamont said
that money came
from investors and
earnings.
Museum
Bruce County
Museum : and
Cultural Centre has
awinner with its
exhibit on climate
change.
Dr. Peter. Storck,
formerly of ; the
Royal Ontario
Museum, helped
create the exhibit --
partly
partly in response
to wide -spread
co icem and ques-
tions about climate
change.
"I think tote :aver-
age person feels
intimidated by. the
• complexity of what
it all means so this
show puts all that
into geological
context," - Dr.
Storck said.
"It tells about
how climate is
shaped on earth,
how it has changed
in the past and
what may be hap-
pening now. It puts
it into a big story."
The exhibit ran
for several months
at Bruce County
Museum and
Cultural Centre in
Southampton and
has now been
leased . by the Pott
Alberni museum m
B.C.
Looking a at the
big picture of cli-
mate change was a
key to the exhibit's
success, Dr. Storck
said.
"We got very
good feedback on
it. People are ..
happy with the fact
that there's no axe
to grind; we're not
pointing fingers"
