New LCPS principal gets warm welcome from students
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
There was a
changing of the
guard, so to speak,
at Lucknow
Central Public
School that
brought in the new
year. It saw the
retirement of prin-
cipal Doug
Hutchinson . and
the introduction of
Mary Martha
Uttley-Shaw.
Uttley-Shaw will
be taking over the
reigns as principal
at LCPS. She's ,not
new to the area
since she was
recently the princi-
pal at Huron
Heights. Public
School in
Kincardine.
Uttley-Shaw
--S-aid she was excit-
ed and asking a lot
ofuestions to .__ get
q
to know everyone
and help in any
way she can. Any
place has a transi-
tion period, but for
Uttley-Shaw it has
been a smooth one.
"Everything is in
good shape here.
It's just the case of
asking a lot of
questions and get-
ting to know the
lay of the land,"
said Uttley-Shaw.
A pleasant
aspect of the move
from Huron
Heights . to LCPS
for Uttley-Shaw is
there isJunior
Kindergarten to
Grade 3 classes,
where at Huron
Heights it was only
a Grade 4 to Grade
8 class structure.
"Here at .LCPS it
will be back to JIB
to Grade 8, so it's
nice to have the
wee guys again.
It's a nice change.
They are all just
different experi-
ences, which - is a
good thin. g," Said
Uttley-Shaw.

School.
Uttley-Shaw is
also excited to
work with a new
staff who = are sup-
portive and an
integral part of the
school community.
She relishes the
new experience
and with the posi-
tive - attitudes of
everyone involved
she feels it . just

teamwork.
Originally work-
ing in the Waterloo
region, this area
was a common
place to cottage for
her family, so it
was a no brainer to
move to the area,..
to continue her
teaching career.
"Originally I
worked at the
Waterloo Regional
School Board for a
number of years.
We came to the
area about five
years ago and we
made the move
because we started
cottaging up here.
We just really like
it and we were
wondering why we
were packing so
many times a
month to come to

dent of

Agricultural
Society, said at the
annual meeting on
Jan. 20 that 2009
would be a

ceeds continue to
decline.
Bowley was
returned as presi-
dent with Janet
Dickie as vice presi-
dent and Steve
Wright as the secre-
tary -treasurer.

Craft Festival
Last year's Craft
Festival was the
38th hosted by the
Lucknow
Agricultural
Society. The trend
of lower crafters and
lower attendees
necessitates a close
review.of.the viabil-
ity of the event.
Efforts to reduce
expenses include
consideration being
given to setting up
for the event on
Friday morning
prior to the opening,
rather than
Thursday night.
This would save
$300.
Fundraising
In an effort to con-
tribute to the organi-
zation's income, a
committee is in
place planning for a
variety concert and
silent auction on
April 4. Many tal-
ented , local people
have confirmed they
will participate.
Watch for more
news on this event.

dents respectively.

the area. It just
started feeling
more ` like home
here. We bought
some land and
built a home and
we just took . the
leap.I just like

for me," said
Uttley-Shaw.
Uttley-Shaw will
not look to change
anything and is
impressed with the
job Hutchinson
was doing and
she'll look to con-
tinue the positive
progress the school
has been going in
over the years.
"I'm not looking
to do anything dif-
ferent at this point.
I think everything
is in good shape
and it's more of a
matter of me play-
ing catch up. The
staff has been real-
ly helpful and: the
kids ° have been too.
I think we just con-
tinue on the course,
y
that were on.
Everything looks
like it's in good
shape right now,
said Uttley-Shaw.
The transition in
the ' middle of the
a bitt: of : a r.
year' was
challenge for
Uttley-Shaw, but
for her it just
is
another new . expe-
rience for her in
becoming princi-
pal at LCPS.
"It was like
Labour Day for
me, starting Jan. 5
because it's a new
school and new
faces. I've never
transitioned at
Christmas time, so
it was a new
endeavor for r,',.
said Uttley-Shaw.
It will be a new,
experience : for
Uttley-Shaw and
LCPS and any-;
thing that brings a
positive attitude to
the village of
Lucknow is a good
thing.
"1 really love
teaching kids and
it's exciting
because =in any
given day you
don't -know what's
going to happen.
It's . a great career
and I'm lucky to
Oe here, said Mary
Martha Uttley-
Shaw.
