Ninety families already signed up for food bank Christmas hamper

Middegaal.
The representatives of St. James
Catholic Church are running the
Christmas Bureau again for the first
time in 10 years. Because St. James
doesn't have a church hall, the dona-
tions are being accepted at the Sea -
forth Agriplex, which is being provid-
ed to the Bureau by the Agricultural
Society for free.
Last year, the Seaforth Christmas
Bureau saw 48 families and 121 chil-
dren, an increase from the year be-
fore.
Families were able to begin regis-
tering for help with the Christmas
Bureau on Monday, Nov 30 calling
519-524-7356 ext. 3271 or 1-800-265-
5198.
As usual, the Bureau is looking for
food, clothes, toys and cash dona-
tions to provide a Christmas for local
families in need.
"We hope we can collect enough
in the area to cover the need," says
Middegaal.
The Bureau will be collecting for
teens up to age 18 for the first time
this year. In previous years, the age
limit was set at 16.
"The teen bracket can be trickier
to buy for," says Melady, adding that
most people have no problem figur-
ing out gifts for younger children..
The Christmas Bureau began its
collection officially last Friday during
the Santa Claus parade when school
children helped the organizers col-
lect donations while walking in the
parade. Help was also received from
the Seaforth Golf Club, which used
golf carts to help collect donations.
Melady and Middegaal say they
still need volunteers to help out at
the Bureau but anticipate they won't
have much trouble finding them.
"We're going to mention it one more
time at church. It'll all come togeth-
er," says Middegaal.
Herb McGowan, of the Seaforth
and District Food Bank, says there
are already 90 families signed up
for the Christmas food hamper this
year, when 65 fam-
ilies were served
last kyear.
The demand
just keeps rising,"
he says.

2,000 jobs — one-third of the manu-
