Ag Society gets
$600 to paint
Roundhouse
Sue_an Hundert;n$rk
Huron East will contribute a maximum of $600
to help the Seaforth Agricultural Society paint the
Roundhouse.
Huron East council made the decision at its Nov 3
meeting after Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight presented
a report about the Agricultural Society's application
to the Huron County Heritage Fund for 50 per cent
of an estimated $2,310 to scrape and paint the build-
ing.
If the Agricultural Society receives the county fund-
ing, the municipality would split the Agricultural So-
ciety's costs. He added that the Agricultural Society
doesn't fit the qualifications of Huron East's financial
assistance for heritage buildings.
"They're in a unique position because technically
they don't pay taxes so they don't qualify for the pro-
gram," he said, referring to the municipality's heri-
tage tax reduction program.
Knight's report said the Roundhouse is an eight -
sided two-storey building, one of just two octagonal
public halls remaining in Ontario and is designated.
"It's on municipal property and it doesn't look very
good," he said.
He added in his report that Mayor Joe Seili had
remarked that the Agricultural Society should be en-
couraged to apply for help under the county's heri-
tage fund and that municipal assistance could be'
given through Huron East's parkland reserve.
Council agrees to fight
`Buy American' rule
While Huron East doesn't have a U.S. counter-
part, council, at its Nov. 3 meeting, supported a
mayor -to -mayor campaign launched to fight the
Buy American requirements in the U.S.
"We don't have a U.S. counterpart but I do sup-
port the campaign," said Mayor Joe Seili. "Putting
up barriers. between countries does kill trade."
The mayor of North Bay sent a letter to Huron
East asking the municipality to join a letter -writing
campaign where Ontario mayors write to U.S. may-
ors in municipalities where they are making large
purchases.
"The thrust of the campaign is to remind U.S.
mayors that the purchases made by Canadian mu-
nicipalities have helped their cities survive through
the recession. Unfortunately, the same U.S. cities
can't purchase Canadian goods and services with
their stimulus money, due to the Buy American pro-
vision," said the letter from Mayor Victor Fedeli, of
North Bay.
