"This legislation is excellent for us," Soldan said. "What is important is it is an excellent deterrent. Driv- ers are paying enough insurance as it is." Second offenders receive a seven- day suspension and for those who still don't get the message, the third warning comes with a 30 -day sus- pension. "At that point, y $u can imagine what their insurance company is thinking," Soldan said. "This is a high risk driver." However, there is good news as well. Soldan said young drivers are proving to be more responsible on the roads. "We're not getting a lot of impaireds from young people," Soldan said. "We checked a couple hundred cars last weekend and the G2s all had zero blood alcohol. "Most young groups will designate a driver." The main offenders are usually adults between 25-65 he said. "We're getting a fair amount of these three-day suspensions," he said. "And we're still getting over 80s." He said an ideal long weekend is one with no fatalities and no acci- dents or injury. lb that end, the OPP will be out in full force this week- end, with a zero - tolerance policy for offenders. Helping them' out on the roads are the newest additions to the OPP fleet, the Dodge Charger. Speeders be- ware, these cars are well equipped with front and rear radar units, as well as the standard hand- held radar. Soldan said with a range of up to one kilo- metre, the car - mounted radar units ensure the OPP . have the jump on speed- ers without them even knowing. "Yc A. probably wouldn't even know you're on radar until we're there," he said. -: "That's where most people are getting their tickets from." le accuracy puta to speed detection is the LIDAR (light detection and ranging), which is a trigger -operated laser that mounts on a tripod. "It's just another tool in the tool belt for us," Soldan said. "All the commu- nities that have had problems with speeding, we set up LIDAR." Examples of those communities are Brussels, Carlow and Auburn, where motorists were not slowing down. Think you can get around the ra- dar? Think again. In addition to the LIDAR, the OPP have another ace up their sleeve with the latest technology in radar detector -detecting. And it works. "We've already seized nine speed measuring warning devices," Soldan said. The fine for having a radar detec- tor is $170 and the police seize and destroy the machine. The message - it's just not worth it, either in dangerous speeds or the cost of getting caught. Off the road, Soldan said there is some confusion in different Huron municipalities about the use of all - terrain vehicles, or ATVs - especially on the roads. There are three types of roads, pro- vincial highways, county roads and municipal roads. The first two are off-limits for ATV drivers while the third is at the discretion of munici- pal council. Out in the water, the marine unit will be keeping an eye on boaters, making sure they are taking safety on the water seriously. "We will be out in the patrol.: ves- sel over the weekend and you can ex- pect to have an equipment check," he said.
