After the walls in the historic Van Egmond
House suffered minor damage due to wa-
ter leaks, threatening some of the priceless
household artifacts of Egmondville's found-
ing family, a new roof has been installed
with a financial grant from the Ontario Tril-
lium Foundation.
The $38,600 grant, which was formally an-
nounced at the Van Egmond House by Hu-
ron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell on July 22,
paid for new cedar shake roofs on the heri-
tage house and adjoining carriage house,
which were installed two weeks ago.
"With older buildings, it's a constant effort
to keep them maintained so our artifacts
and exhibits inside are not damaged and we
can carry out our historical purpose in the
community," said Ralph Smith, vice -chair of
the Van Egmond Foundation.
The Van Egmond Foundation applied for
the grant last year after the old roof, which
was installed 26 years ago with improper
materials, became brittle.
At the time, the Van Egmond Founda-
tion and the site's volunteers worried that
the handful of fundraisers they held each
year wouldn't be enough to pay for the new
"Without this support from the Ontario
Trillium Foundation, projects of this magni-
tude simply wouldn't be possible for our vol-
unteers to raise the necessary funds," Smith
said.
"As a result, our heritage site can continue
its education program and exhibit displays
featuring the life and times of the Van Eg-
mond family and their role in the develop-
ment of the Huron Tract," he added.
Mitchell called the grant to replace the roof
"a worthwhile project."
"It really is important to retain our histori-
cal equipment and that's what you've done
here," she told a group of Van Egmond House
volunteers gathered for the announcement.
"We know that without a roof, we don't have
much of anything because it doesn't take
long before the insides are damaged and it
can happen very quickly."
Kathleen Pletsch, the Ontario Trillium
Foundation local grant review team chair,
said the Van Egmond House "goes far be-
yond just the artifacts."
"I used to be a board member here. I love
this house and everything that the Van Eg-
mond Society stands for. It's a museum, but
it's truly a living museum," she said.
