Summer literacy program kicks off at Huron libraries
Seaforth's Stacie Van Miltenburg
wants school -aged children to know
that just because class is out for the
summer, it's no reason not to pick up a
book and continue reading.
The 18 -year-old is this year's sum-
mer literacy co-ordinator for the TD
Summer Reading Club for Huron
County Library branches.
The program began on June 27 and
will be running until Aug. 21.
Van Miltenburg, who also studies at
Seneca College in the library science
program, has children ages four to 12
getting interested in reading during
the summer by incorporating an excit-
ing theme.
Libraries all over Ontario have ad-
opted the "Agent 009" theme for the
program and the Toronto Dominion

Financial Group is supplying libraries
with a manual for co-ordinators such
as Van Miltenburg to help carry out
the program.
Van Miltenburg and fellow co-ordina-
tor Megan Finkbeiner, 20, of Crediton,
also come up with weekly bi-themes
that branch out from the "Agent 009"
idea, such as "Cracking Codes," "Dis-
guises," and "Villains and bad guys."
So far, the kids are on board, Van
Miltenburg says.
"They're really excited," she says.
"The purpose is to introduce reading
for fun and to keep them reading over
the summer. It also shows them .what
the library has to offer. There's more
than just books."
Van Miltenburg notes that the pro-
gram has the children making spy -
themed crafts, such as binoculars and
wanted posters.
Stickers, posters and logbooks for all
the children have been supplied by the
Toronto Dominion Financial Group,
and other materials for making crafts
have been purchased through fund-
raising by each branch.
Van Miltenburg says with all the
branches combined, about 300 chil-
dren regularly show up for the pro-
gram.
It's offered free in Seaforth at 2:45
p.m. on Mondays for kids ages four to
six and at 3:45 for seven to 12 -year-
olds.
For more information, call Van
Miltenburg at 519-482-5457.
The Rebels With A Cause group came out to the Vanastra Rec Centre's day
camp Tuesday moming, to spread the word about avoiding both tobacco use
and advertising. The Rebels group also handed out a number of special prizes to
the more than a dozen children that listened to the presentation. Seen check-
ing out their freebie Frisbees are Evey, 9, Leighton, 11, Trent, 6, Willow, 6, and
