Harrison takes on the octathlon in Hamilton
Dan Schwab
A month of diligent training paid
off for 16 -year-old Luke Harrison of
Egmondville, who recently placed
fourth overall in the Royal Canadi-
an Legion Ontario Command Track
& Field Championships July 10-11.
Harrison participated in the oc-
tathlon, which had him running,
jumping, hurdling and shot putting
and throwing a javelin in a jam-
packed two-day schedule at Mohawk
Stadium in Hamilton.
He finished first in the 1,000 me-
tre run, second in the 100 metre
sprint, third in shot put, third in the
400 metre run, third in long jump,
fourth in javelin, fourth in the 110
metre hurdles and third in the high
jump event, jumping a height of one
metre 62 centimetres.
At the start of the competition,
Harrison faced off against about a
dozen athletes, who were all at least
one year older than him.
Before the end of the second day,
a couple athletes sustained injuries
a few points behind third
place.
With only about a 20 -
minute break between
events, Harrison says the
two-day ordeal was in-
credibly draining.
"After the javelin, I
`almost fell asleep," he
joked..
What's even more im-
pressive about Harrison's
performance than being
the youngest athlete to
compete is that up until
about a month ago, he'd
never tried some of the
field events.
He joked that he
earned a personal best
in the events during the
Luke Harrison and trainer Terry Johnston headed to octathlon simply because
Hamilton recently when Harrison comPetedan it was the first time he'd

and had to drop out of the octath- One of the track and
lon, while others quit, leaving about field coaches at Central Huron Sec-

mondville, would pick up the teen-
ager every day at 7:30 a.m. and take
him to the track at St. Anne's Sec-
ondary School to train.
Johnston, who's been coaching
track and field for nearly 40 years,
says he was impressed with Harri-
son's dedication.
"We worked him pretty hard and it
paid off," Johnston says. "I give him
a lot of credit, because this came af-
ter school had ended and he was still
willing to go to the track and work
really hard. That's why I was willing
to give up my time."
Harrison made it to the e OFSAA
West Region track and field meet
last season in the 300 metre hurdle

He says next year, he's looking for-

school and during next summer's
