She submitted her business plan to
the Huron Business Enterprise Cen-
tre in Seaforth, as one of about 18 local
young people to do so.
About 500 young entrepreneurs
across the province would be accepted
into the program, and Ryan was de-
lighted when she got the green light to
opep Kate's on 8.
"It's been in my mind for a couple
years now," the Mitchell District High
School student says. "There are no jobs
for young people in St. Columban and I
don't have a licence so I can't drive out
of town, so I decided to open my own
business."
Ryan received a startup grant of
$1,500 through the program, which
she used to purchase a roadside sign,
a soft -serve ice k:ream machine and a
freezer.
She decorated the inside of the shop
herself, with colorful umbrellas and
tablecloths, which might remind cus-
tomers of a picnic setting at the beach.
She also posted a white board at the
front of the store and encouraged kids
to sign their names on it. After a week,
every square centimeter was filled with
colourful signatures -- a testament to
her growing cus-
tomer base.
Being located
across from the
St. Columban
soccer field was
also a wise busi-
ness decision,
as players often
head to Kate's on
8 after games on
Monday nights.
"Usually they're
lined up outside
the store and
down the steps,"
Ryan says. "Once
there was a
steady line-up of
about 25 people
waiting for about
half an hour."
With part-time
help from her
neighbour Erin
Feeney, 17, Ryan
says the busy
nights are never
too much to han-
dle.
"I don't get too
flustered," she
says. "If anything,
it's a rush."

Canada's Economic Action Plan supports the renewal of the
agriculture sector and enables agricultural co-operatives to better seize
market opportunities. The Canadian Agricultural Loans Act (CALA) guarantees
an estimated $1 billion in loans over the next five years to Canadian farm families
and agricultural co-operatives. Farmers can use these loans to establish, improve,
and develop farms. Agricultural co-operatives may access loans to process, distribute,
or market the products of farming.
CALA features:
Up to $500,000 loans for land and buildings
Up to $350,000 for all other loan purposes
(The maximum aggregate loan limit for any one borrower is $500,000 and $3 million for agricultural co-operatives)
Eligible applicants include:
• Established farmers
• Beginning/start-up farmers (i.e. less than 6 years of farming)
• Farmers taking over the family farm
• Agricultural co-operatives with a majority (50% + 1) farmer membership
