Infrastructure Canada program and
Recreation Ontario in May and the
announcement that Huron East re-
ceived funding for' the Seaforth are-
na was made last week.
"That's a fantastic turnaround for
grants," he said.
Flowers said several of the Seaforth
arena's compressors are nearing the
end of their life expectancy and the
grant will allow the arena board to
replace them.
As well, he said an expanded lobby
with an improved viewing area of
the ice has been on the arena board's
wish list for several years.
"There are just three windows now
and we want to make it more user
friendly for People watching the
games in a heated viewing area.. We
want to make the game the centre-
piece . of everything and we're hoping
a new lobby will spruce it right up
- it is a 25 -year-old .building and it
needs a new look," said Flowers.
He said he expects at least $95,000
to be spent on repainting and re -
coating the roof, an amount recently
quoted for the job.
"The steel wasn't in that bad a
shape so we can get away with just
painting it and it should have anoth-
er 25 -year life expectancy," .he said.
Flowers said that while the Sea-
forth arena asked for " funding for
a $1.2 million project, the funding
they received will allow a $1 million

work planned to be done.
"Overall, it's going to be fantastic.
We can move ahead. It's very pro-
gressive for the community to get
things up-to-date at the arena," he
said.
Huron East Mayor Joe Seili
thanked Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb
and MPP Carol Mitchell when the
grant was announced at the arena
last Monday.
"We appreciate the funding that's
come through for the Seaforth arena.
We've held off for awhile from doing
some of the projects that are need-
ed," he said.
"Investments have been needed
in recreation for a very long time,"
agreed Mitchell, who added that rec-
reation is what attracts and retains
people to rural areas.
Lobb said the grant is a great in-
vestment in the rural lifestyle.
"Recreation is what we need when
we want to attract professionals. The
great outdoors and recreation make
this a great place, to be," he said.
"Recreational facilities are essen-
tial social and athletic hubs in our
communities. They bring us together
as . families, friends and neighbors to
have fun and to stay active," Lobb
said in a press release.
"Providing funding for recreational
facilities, such as arenas and parks,
is a great way to help bolster a com-
munity by making sure that its resi-
',gents stay active and involved in the
community" said Mitchell in a press
release.
"Many of these facilities and parks
are local institutions that people in
the community, past and present,
have strong civic connections to. 1
am very pleased that we have been
able to maintain a -part of the past
while looking towards the future,"
she said in the press release.
