Habitat Restore sets up temporarily at old Giant Tiger site
Restore offers affordable new or used building materials, reducing waste In landfill
Gerard Creces
Habitat for Humanity Huron Coun-
ty now has a roof over its head with
the opening of the Goderich ReStore
at the former site of Giant Tiger in
the Zehrs plaza on Highway 8.
The ReStore is only a temporary
site, as Goderich 'Ibwn Council ap-
proved the not -for -profit's site plan
agreement for a permanent Parsons
Court home June 15.
In the interim, the ReStore will
continue with a strong focus on the
three Rs - reducing, reusing and re-
cycling.
The store not only allows homeown-
ers to purchase affordable new or
used building materials, but works.
to redirect waste from landfills and
offers discontinued products that
would normally end up discarded.
Executive director of HHHC, Kevin
Morrison, said the reusing of materi-
als becomes much more necessary as
the Mid -Huron Landfill Site looms
closer to its closure date.
"We have a situation with our lo-
cal landfill," he said. "It's going to
close. There is a lot of product (being
thrown away) that could have been
donated."
All .profits made from the ReStore
will go toward Habitat for Human-
ity builds, and Morrison said govern-
ment stimulus funding .could allow
the volunteer group to acquire full-,
time employees for the retail opera-
tion.
Giant Tiger manager Mike Berry
said the store is. "more than happy to
support" HHHC, and Morrison said
his work in donating the building for
Habitat use has saved them upwards
of $25,000.
"It is truly a community partner-
ship," he said. "I've never been in-
volved with such dedicated volun-
teers. -
"We're not a cause, we're a move-
ment."
Huron County's Habitat group con-
tinues to raise the bar for the non-
profit organization, achieving one
new •home built every year and Wok-
ing to the possibility of two builds
annually in the near future.
"Numerous affiliates don't do that,",
he said. "We are a model for commu-
nities
ommu-
n_ ities this size."
Huron Business Development
Corporation president Pam Stanley
offered her thanks to the Habitat
group, saying they • "brought anoth-
Volunteer Bob Rowe
er dimension to Huron
County."
Goderich Coun. Myles
Murdock said HHHC
fills in the gaps in the
community where gov-
ernment organizations
fall short.
"Local governments
cover the basics of life,
but it's the quality of life
that matters," he said.
"Organizations like this
really improve that."
Morrison offered his
thanks to the munici-
palities of Goderich and
Central Huron for their
support and coopera-
tion.
He also expressedthis
gratitude for the hours
put in by the Willing
Workers of - Goderich,
volunteering their time
to arrange the prod-
uct currently stored in
trailers and garages in
the new ReStore.
The store will be open
for business July 4 at 10
a.m.
