Huron Expositor, 2017-06-14, Page 1616 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, June 14. 2017 Maelstrom winery continues to grow Justine Alkema Postmedia Network The Maelstrom Winery began in 2009 as a pioneer- ing initiative and experiment - the first winery in Huron County. Its founders weren't even sure it would be possi- ble to grow in this climate. It's within minutes from Sea - forth, just off 1 lighway 8. Since then, they have been growing their operation. Most recently, they proved into a brand new building a few weeks ago, open for the public every day from 11 a.rn.-6 p.rn. 'Fhe building's outside is wood, and they are alloi, ving it to age naturally, going for the bar n wood look. They had been operating out of a transformed garage. The new space allows much more room for tourists and visitors and is a modern space right by the vines. While they were initially advised their clientele would be 90 per cent tourists and 11 per cent locals, they've received much more local support than that, about 50/50 between resi- dents and tourists. They also recently won three awards at an interna- tional wine competition. The event is the annual Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. Maelstrom sent in four of their varieties, and they won silver for their white Vidal, and two bronze medals for their red Marquette and their red Marechal Foch. Brian Landsborough, who started the winery with his parents Jim and Catherine, said they weren't sure how their hybrid reds would stack up on an international scale. "We really like our wines, but on a grand scale, usually cold climate reds don't do as well," he said. "So for us to win three awards was really eye-opening for us that we can make high quality reds here" TO ADVERTISE HERE PLEASE CALL 519-482-3443 NEUTEL CONSTRUCTION LTD "Complete Concrete Forming & Finishing" 519-482-3049 TO ADVERTISE HERE PLEASE CALL 519-482-3443 CLINTON GLASSAIIRROR • Windows.
