raised $9,000 for

It's been 16 -plus years for the Bids
and Bites event, a mission that donates
to the three women's shelters in the
region.
Usually the annual chartable endeav-
our takes place in Mitchell, but since
the number of people participating has
grown so much, they outgrew their pre-
vious space and subsequently chose to
take up shop at the Seaforth District
and Community Centre for the second
year in a row.
All the funds gathered April 20 will be
divided with 25 per cent going to the
Optimism Place and 25 per cent is
donated to the Emily Murphy Centre,
both of which are in Stratford while the
other 50 per cent is given to the Huron
Women's shelter.
As well, $4,000 goes towards back-
packs and school supplies for children
who live inside the three shelters.
Occasional Teachers provided $2,000
and the parent organization, the Ele-
mentary Teachers' Federation of
Ontario matched their donation.
"When the children end up in the
women's shelter, a lot of times (they)
leave everything behind, they just pack
up and they go," said Kim Finlayson, the
Occasional Teachers president at Avon
Maitland who has been participating in
the event since it first broke ground.
"Being a teacher myself and seeing
those kids that have been uprooted and
had to start in a new school with noth-
ing, it's just so exciting for them to get a
new backpack."
And the event's contributions are not
unnoticed.
A few years ago, a young girl who
resided in one of the three shelters
wrote a letter, "she told us how much
she loved her backpack and lunch box."
The youngster attached a picture of
herself going to school holding her
mother's hand, it's little things like that
which make the event worth the while,
said Finlayson.
Approximately $9000 was raised to
support the respected women's shel-
ters, which was $1500 more than the
previous year.
