Habitat for Humanity Huron County builds third house in Clinton Justine Alkema Postmedia Network Habitat for Humanity is building their third home in Clinton, this time on Dun- lop Street. The groundbreaking cere- mony for the construction took place on Sunday, April 9, and the home is expected to be up in three to six months. The non-profit built a home in Clin- ton for the first time in 2005 and the second time in 2012. The first home and the third home are both on plots of lands that were donated by the Munici- pality of Central Huron. Habitat for Humanity has built 11 homes in Huron County since their inception in 2004. They also have ReStore thrift stores in Goderich and Exeter. Executive Director Cheryl Jefferson explained that their homes are designed to be affordable and yet fit the neighbourhood. They depend on vol- unteer labour and in kind donations from the community and are still look- ing for help from those that are willing. Towards the end of May, they will start needing volunteers on site to do framing, insulation and dry wall. Get- ting into July and August, they will need help painting and landscaping. They are also looking for volunteers to pro- vide light lunches and/or snacks for morning or afternoon coffee breaks. Jefferson said they are involving local high school construction classes in the building of the homes as well. There is a standard process to decide which families qualify for the program. "Anyone who wants to apply for our home ownership program has to dem- onstrate three elements," said Jefferson. "Number one, they are in need of hous- ing. Number two, they can afford to pay the mortgage (and home insurance and property taxes). Number three, they are willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity for 500 hours of volunteer time." Adults can put in volunteer time at a ReStore, on the build site if they have construction skills, or at any event planned by Habitat for Humanity. There are ways for children to contrib- ute as well, for example by presenting a satisfactory report card or even by help- ing at events in different ways. "Anyone paying more than 50% of their income to housing is considered in need of affordable housing," said Jef- ferson. Jefferson said they do sell the homes to the families, but monthly pay- ments are geared to income and aren't too exceed 30% of the family's income. She said the have a family selection committee who looks at the three quali- fications and decides who are candi- dates for the program. The Libro Credit Union Clinton branch has been involved along the way with the new home. They donated $5000 last fall and are contacts in Clin- ton for things like volunteer forms, etc. They also organized the ground-break- seaforthhuronexpositor.com PARK THEATRE The Square 1GODERICH 519 524 7811 '1 • 1 • • 1 • 4... :..1.. . www.movielinks.ca (ong distarce'l -800-265-3438 ing ceremony on Sunday and will pro- vide updates as the project continues. Jefferson wanted to give a sincere thanks to the Municipality of Central Huron and the Libro Credit Union for all their help and generous donations with the project. For one family, it will be life changing. Londesborough United Church 1II k..
