Most of the bunch is not yet
eligible for high school, age is
only a number to these teenag-
ers -they let their science pro-
jects do the talking.
In a joint science fair hosted
by both the Avon Maitland Dis-
trict School Board and the
Huron Perth Catholic District
School Board, 77 students show-
cased their work with the hopes
of being one of the five winners
to move on to the national sci-
ence competition.
Those five will head to Regina,
Sask. from May 14-20 to com-
pete against roughly 500 other
young scientists at the Canada -
Wide Science Festival.
With Bristol board displaying
their data collected, predominantly
Grade 7-8 students from the region
filled the Seaforth and District
Community Centre April 12.
Don Pottruff, teacher and
learning coordinator for Avon
Maitland District School Board
says this is a competitive venue,
especially as the participants are
aware of the benefits of walking
away victorious.
He said in the past, winners have
won trips to Africa while others
were given S40,000 towards their
post -secondary tuition.
(L to R) Mary Helen Van Loon — Trustee for Huron -Perth Catholic DSB,
Ethan Aarts (Holy Name of Mary), Maitland Roy (Huron Centennial), Harley
Edwards (South Huron DHS), Lane Edgar (Brookside) and Randy Wagler —
Avon Maitland DSB Board Chair.
To win, Pottruff said the judges
are looking at how well they can
understand the scientific method
with a "big piece" being scored on
originality and presentation.
"You can't do a project that's
been done for the last 20 years;'
he said.
Several students have worked
meticulously on these science
projects for the last year.
"Sometimes we have a stu-
dent that comes here one year
and does a project and then
when they realize what they can
really win, they spend a lot of
time on it: stated Pottruff.
Seaforth native, Isaac Bennew-
ies, a Grade 7 student from I luron
Centennial created a magnetic
fluid out of shredded steel wool
and vegetable oil with his partner
in the project, Patrick Denys.
"It's basically any type of fluid
that is magnetic, we tried differ-
ent things to make it, one was
printer toner, but we didn't
know it had to be magnetic,"
explained Bennewies.
Denys said he started to develop
a love for magnetic science after
traveling to the nickel mine in Sud-
bury Ont. When he heard Bennew-
ies was thinking of a project to do
with magnets- he was in.
The 2017 I-luron Perth - Can-
ada Wide Team will include:
