Huroi County has seep some of
the west damage to spring cereal
crops iii 'Southwestern Ontario due
to heavy amounts of rainfall since
April.
Peter..Johnson, :: a _cereals special-
ist witthe Ministry ofAgriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs, says sev-
eral inches of hard poundding rain
that fell late that month damaged
the soil in someareas so much that
it destroyed the good soil structure
farmers had seen in their fields in
early spring and forced them to
plant soy bean and corn crops late.

ports ( from producers," Johnson
says. "Now, we're fighting to get
back to decent shape."
Wet conditions have also caused
alfalfa and winter barley crops to
struggle and many producers re-
ceived disappointing yields from
their hay crops.
"Hay crops were really beat up
ands even good hay was generally
below average," Johnson says.
"We're under some pressure to have
enough forage for dairy cattle."
Much of the area's wheat crop
is also suffering from a symptom
called physiological fleck, which
causes yellow spots to form on the
leaves that eventually become un-
sightly,dark brown lesions.

Weather conditions are the rea.
son behind the symptom, with the
extended periods of cloudy and
rainy days followed by brief sun-
shine the county has experienced
this spring. •
"It's basically a sunburn," John-
son says.
However, what may be the most
surprising a story . coming out of
the fields this week is the copious
amounts of aphids farmers are
finding in winter wheat and other
spring cereal crops,
Some farmers have been forced to
spray their winter wheat crops to
exterminate the pests — something
that is extremely rare in Ontario.

Yield expectations have been re-
duced, Johnson says.
And while it's not uncommon- to.
find aphids in soybean . crops, the
fact that they're turning up this
early in the season in huge amounts
is alarming, Johnson says.
"It raises the caution flag that we
have to be paying attention to the
soybean fields," he says.
To remedy some of these prob-
lems, farmers will need a steady
dose of heat and continued mois-
ture in the weather forecast, John-
son says.
