ondville ratepayers shown two gravity systems and
two alternative systems to solve local sewage problem
From Page 1
As well, the initial costs are more ex-
pensive than alternative methods.
She said a modified gravity system
would install sewer pipe at a mini-
mum excavation depth but the sys-
tem isn't guaranteed -for basements,
which might require either a lift
pump or grinder pump.
She said a modified gravity system
was installed in Bayfield in the early
2000s.
The two alternative methods in-
clude the STEG (septic tank effluent
gravity system) and the STEP (sep-
tic tank effluent pumping system),
both of . which involve septic tanks
which separate solids from liquids
and send the liquids to the sewage
system , either by gravity or pump-
ing. ,
Vader said both have limited ex-
cavation requirements and are in-
stalled in the boulevard, not the
middle of the road.,
"The con is you still have a tank at
your house that has to be pumped out
every three to 10 years," she said.
As well, since the alternative sys-
tems have smaller pipes, the pipes
can be blocked and the airtight tanks
can be subject to corrosion and cre-
ate odour.
On the STEP system, an alarm will
sound if there is a problem with the

PuVader said the varied topography
of Egmondville could allow different
areas to make different choices.
For example, she said the red
and dark green areas on the map
would bewell served by gravity and
wouldn't need a pumping station but
the lighter green area would need a
pumping station.
Vader said the tcchnicar steering
committee will continue to study
the alternatives with a preferred al-
ternative deadline in the fall, when
both council and the public will be
presented with the details.
"We really do want your input.
There are a lot of . advantages and
disadvantages and we want to know
what you think about them," she
said to Egmondville residents.
Huron East Clerk -Administrator
Jack McLachlan told the crowd . that
the four alternatives, along with the
one preferred by the committee will
be voted on by Egmondville resi-
dents.
A homeowner asked what happens
to existing septic systems if the com-
munity votes to go with one of the
four alternatives.
Vader said existing septic systems
can't be converted to suit the two
alternative collection methods but
would be filled in and abandoned
with no cost to decommission it.
Another homeowner asked how

As well, Mitchell and Dublin customers will
be able to get phone service from Quadro some-
time in the new year because of the June 1
purchase.
"The opportunity came up and we
feel as a group that the, purchase fit
very well with the telecommunica-
tions side of our business.. It is very
exciting," says Sharon Chuter, gen-
eral manager of Tuckersmith Com-
munications.
Chuter says the purchase will al-
low the three companies to expand
their phone service into areas where
they currently can't, including Dub-
lin, Mitchell, Blyth, Lucan and Brus-
sels.
The acquisition by the local telcos
was finalized with members of the
Ward family, the founders of Ward
Cable T.V. Ltd, Grand Bend Cable
T.V. Ltd, Mitchell Seaforth Cable
T.V. Ltd, and Ezlink Ltd.
No immediate changes will be made
to any of the companies involved.
Steve Ward will remain as general
manager of the cable companies, but
all parties will begin to investigate
sharing of facilities, ,technologies
and investments to capitalize on ex-
isting and future investments.

The local telcos are not new to the Digi-
tal Television service industry. Recently they
launched IPTV services to their customers.
"The acquisition of the companies is a fit for

together to ensure value for both customers
and employees," says Sharon Chuter, general

Egmondville residents are supposed
to come up with the morieyyto pay for
any of the alternatives.
Potter said the municipality will
let each property owner pay a lump
sum or a series of payments over -10-
15 years.
Potter added that provincial and/or
federal grants will likely continue to
be available for sewage projects.
"It's reasonable to proceed through
the process and wait for the next
grant program. Municipalities that
were waiting have been most pleased
by recent grants. We probably should
have been out the gate a few years
earlier'for the best results,” he said.
Huron East Coun. David Blaney
reminded hiin that the municipal-
ity had been told inthe past that the
province would be cutting off infra-
structufe grants , in 2011.
