St. Anne's boysrugby team wins WOSSAA
but season ends after falling short at OFSAA
Dan Schwab
After a triumphant 25-0 victory
against Lord Dorchester High
School to win the gold medal at
WOSSAA, the St. Anne's Second-
ary School boys' rugby team trav-
eled to Waterford to compete in
the OFSAA tournament June 3-4.
The team was flying high after
winning the WOSSAA title, which
was preceded by a 46-0 thrashing
of Woodstock District Collegiate
High School to advance to the gold
medal match.
When the boys hit the field on
June 3 to play their first OFSAA
game against St. Clair Secondary
School of Sarnia, they were ready
for action.
But coach Glen Ditner says the
team just wasn't coming together
to make the plays needed to make
the win that day, and lost the
match 24-0.
"They were a better team," Dit-
ner says. "If our guys played the
game they were capable of play-
ing, it could've been closer."
The loss put the boys into a con-
solation match against Mentor
College School from Port Hope.
The St. Anne's team's strong play
on the field paid off and the boys
came away •with
a 12-5 victory.
From there,
they advanced to..
the consolation
semi-final match
against Trinity
College School
from Port Hope.

Going into the
second half,
St. Anne's held
a 17-10 lead.
Trinity ` tied
the game with
only a couple
minutes left
and scored on
the last play
of the game
to clinch the
victory with a
final score of
22-17.
The loss end-
ed the 2009
rugby season
for the St.
Anne's team.
"It was a
bit of a heart-
breaker," Dit-
ner says.
Still, the sea-
son was full of
highlights, the
coach adds.
"It's always
a good experi-
ence going to
OFSAA and hopefully we'll be go-
ing back next year to make some
noise," he says.
The St. Anne's Eagles senior boys' rugby team defeated Woodstock Collegiate High School 46-0 May
28 before beating Lord Dorchester High School 25-0 In the gold medal match. Last week, the Eagles
lost to St. Clair Secondary School of Sarnia, ending their chances of winning the OFSAA title.
Before the players hang up their
jerseys for the year, they'll be play-
ing one more "fun game" against
Sacred Heart of Wingham, the
school where Ditner graduated.
And earlier this week, the team's
top players were presented with
awards during an athletic and
academic banquet for St.
Anne's Secondary School in
Goderich.
Several of the players who
contributed to the team's
success are from Seaforth,
including Connor Devereaux,
Travis Loughnane, Brandon
Van Dyk and Matt Huether.
Kurt Hoggart, also from
Seaforth, dislocated a shoul-
der earlier in the season.
David Grobbink and Dan
Dery, both from Walton, are
also team members.
"These guys were extreme-
ly significant contributors to
the success of our team," Dit-
ner says.
The coach says eight of the
15 players this season were
in Grade 11 and will be re-
turning for another season
next year, along with four
Grade 12 players who are
coming back for a final year
of high school.
