Huron doesn't lead province with food and water -borne illness
To the Editor,
We would like to clarify informa-
tion contained in your article from
June 3 (Epidemiologist says Huron
residents need healthier lifestyle).
The statement that there are more
food and waterborne -related illness-
es in this region than in the province
as a whole is inaccurate. In fact, we
had only 71 cases of these illnesses
known to cause vomiting and diar-
rhea in humans in 2005, the most
recent year of reported data.
These illnesses can come from con-
taminated food and water, as well
as through contact with infected an-
imals. In Huron County it is more
common for some of these diseases
to come from contact with animals
or their feces, or by swallowing wa-
ter from our streams or lake.
It is for this reason that we strong-
ly advise people to always wash their
hands thoroughly after any animal
contact. We also encourage people to
avoid getting lake or stream water
in their mouth.
It is true that Huron County has a
higher rate per capita of these dis-
eases than the province as a whole.
A rate allows comparisons between
populations.
However, our total number of cas-
es does not lead the province. Our
residents need to be assured that
our store bought and restaurant
food in Huron County is safe and
our treated drinking water and most
untreated ground water in Huron
County is safe.
Details on the health of Huron
County residents can be found in

Status Report at www.huroncounty.

safe manner.
There are just way toomany un-
answered questions in my opinion
and the rural population doesn't
want or need to be your guinea pig
anymore!
Don't think it's all quiet in your ru-
ral communities and farming area.
It could be happening right next
door...that's the . way it happens,
while you're quietly doing your best
these companies are swiftly doing
what they do best - taking advan-
tage of people with only one goal in
mind...

stomach gnawing away with a sense
of hunger most of the two days.
When the two days were over, I
found myself savouring a carrot with
a mindful pleasure, enjoying the
crunch and the flavour with aware-
ness of its goodness.
While it was great to put a bunch

seems to me that next year, a concen-

position to make political change to
a system that has created the need
for food banks.
Perhaps Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell and Huron -Bruce MP Ben
Lobb could be persuaded to partici-
pate so they could gain some first-
hand knowledge about how people
are forced to live while on unemploy-
ment insurance, welfare and other
forms of social assistance.
As the numbers of food bank recipi-
ents' grow — in some cases doubling
since last year — it seems apparent
that food banks, which depend on
the generosity of donors, aren't going
to be able to meet the need forever.
While we might think we under-
stand intellectually about poverty
and what it's like to need a food
bank, there's nothing like eating for
two days from someone else's food
box to get a real taste of it.
