National Hunger Awareness Day is an.
initiative organized by the Canadian Asso-
ciation of Food Banks and the Huron Coun-
ty rural food banks challenged more than a
dozen high profile residents to live for two
days with only the supplies they received
from their local food bank.
The participants; who included Elliott,
president of the Seaforth Business Improve-
mentArea, Susan Hundertmark, Huron Ex-
positor editor, Huron County warden Ken
Oke, Huron County board of health mem-
ber Rosemary Rognvaldson, The Bull's Joey
Martin, The One's Dave Newman, CKNX's
Phil Main, The Beach's Kristylee Varley
and Ally Anderson and Shawn Loughlin of
The Citizen, wrote about their experiences
on a blog at ruralfoodbank.wordpress.eom.
Warden Ken Oke told Huron County coun-
cil about his two-day adventure eating out
of the food bank box at county council last
Wednesday and he made similar comments
about the lack of fresh food.
"My box had plenty in it but I'm not used

, As one of about 15 people throughout Hu-
ron County who lived on food bank fare for
two days for National Hunger Awareness
Day on June 2, Seaforth's Cathy Elliott
found the experience to be an eye-opener.
"You have to be very creative and orga-
nized to live out of the food bank box. You
have plan long range and families have to
ration out the food, ' she said.
But, while Elliott said she personally
found the quantity of food she received
adequate, it was the quality she was most
concerned about.
"For anyone with heart or kidney prob-
lems, •there wasa lot of sodium in the
canned food so it's not healthy. And, since
the people using the food banks are already
on limited budgets, they often can't afford
their medication while eating unhealthy
food," she said.
And, she missed her fresh fruit and veg-
gies and the enjoyment of anticipating a
meal filled with variety, flavour and good
nutrition.
"At this time of year with all the fresh food
available in Ontario, it was frustrating not

While Huron East is still
looking for a lawyer to con-
f3ult about what actions it
caTn take regarding two wind
turbine projects planned for
St. Columban, a group of
close to 60 residents were
urged by councillors to con-
tinue getting as much pub-
licity as possible about their
objections.
"What you're doing is
great," Mayor Joe Seili said
to the St. Columban resi-
dents at Huron East's June
2 council meeting.
"(Energy and Infrastruc-
ture Minister George) Smi-
therman used to be Health
Minister and he poured a
lot of money into health-
care. He's very receptive to
preventative medicine so
I can't see him sliding this
under the table," he said.
Over 100 people from the
St. Columban area attend-
ed the May 19 Huron East
council meeting asking for
a moratorium on the two
wind projects planned in
McKillop by CASA Engi-
neering and Construction,
of Ibronto.
Seili said municipal staff
has been working hard since
that meeting researching
the issue of wind turbines
and trying to find out what
actions the municipality can
take.
"We need people to know
the staff and planners have
been spending hours on
this. We're not sitting on
